Early Life and Education

Dr. Shafiqul Rahman was born on October 31, 1958, in Bhatera Union of Kulaura Upazila, Moulvibazar District, Bangladesh. He is the third of four children born to Md. Abrar Mia and Khatibun Nessa.

He completed his SSC from Bormachal High School in 1974 and his HSC from MC College, Sylhet, in 1976. In 1983, he earned his MBBS degree from Sylhet Medical College, qualifying as a physician.

Political Journey

Dr. Rahman began his political career as a student in 1973 by joining the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Student League. In 1977, he joined the Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir. While studying at Sylhet Medical College, he served as the president of the Shibir's medical wing and later as the president of the Sylhet branch.

In 1984, he joined the main party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and began serving as the Sylhet district Ameer. He was appointed central Assistant Secretary General in 2010, and on September 19, 2011, he assumed the role of Acting Secretary General. In 2016, he was appointed full Secretary General, holding a pivotal position in the party’s top leadership.

Dr. Rahman also contested the 11th national parliamentary elections as a candidate of the National Unity Front (Jatiya Oikya Front) from Dhaka-15. On November 12, 2019, he was re-elected as Ameer and continues to serve in that capacity.
