Anticipation Builds in Dhaka Ahead of Tarique Rahman’s Return

After spending 18 years in exile, the anticipated return of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has created fresh momentum in Bangladesh’s political arena. From the capital to rural areas, discussions about his homecoming dominate marketplaces, tea stalls, and neighborhood gatherings. Among ordinary citizens, there is visible excitement, enthusiasm, and a sense of expectation. For many, this return is not merely the arrival of a political leader, but the end of a long period of waiting. According to BNP leaders and activists, extensive preparations are underway in Dhaka ahead of Tarique Rahman’s arrival on December 25. Party insiders believe that a massive turnout is likely on that day, potentially turning it into one of the largest political gatherings in recent years. Even before the date arrives, Dhaka’s atmosphere appears charged with political anticipation.

Several BNP leaders and grassroots activists claim that millions of people may gather in the capital to welcome Tarique Rahman. Key areas such as Naya Paltan, Kakrail, and Motijheel are expected to experience heavy crowds, raising concerns about possible disruptions to normal traffic movement. Alongside party supporters, the spontaneous participation of ordinary citizens is expected to further expand and energize the gathering.

Party sources say that large crowds may line the routes stretching from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport through major city roads to Naya Paltan. The preparations are not limited to Dhaka alone. BNP leaders and activists from districts, upazilas, and divisional cities across the country are making plans to travel to the capital. At the same time, students from various educational institutions and people from remote regions are planning to come to Dhaka at their own expense, eager to catch a glimpse of Tarique Rahman after many years.

Many within the BNP believe that Tarique Rahman’s prolonged political exile has given his leadership a new dimension. His long absence has deepened emotional attachment and expectations among his supporters. There is a growing belief within the party that his return will reinvigorate BNP’s organizational strength and mark the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s political landscape.

Political analysts note that despite remaining abroad for a long time, Tarique Rahman has consistently remained at the center of political discourse in Bangladesh. His absence generated debate, criticism, and support alike, keeping him firmly within public discussion. Among supporters, this absence also fostered a sense of anticipation and curiosity. Many observers believe that December 25 will bring an end to that prolonged wait.

Notably, no large central budget has been allocated by the party for the welcome program. Instead, local leaders are encouraging members of their respective organizational units to travel to Dhaka. In many cases, transportation and participation are being arranged through spontaneous, grassroots-level initiatives. Party leaders believe this will give the event a more organic and people-driven character.

At the same time, BNP leaders have emphasized that maintaining order and preventing any form of unrest or unwanted incidents is a top priority. Senior party figures have stated that ensuring a peaceful environment and maintaining law and order remain their primary objectives. To that end, a high-level monitoring committee has been formed to closely oversee the overall situation.
