Goyeshwar Chandra Roy:A Responsible,Visionary, and Promising Statesman of Bangladesh

Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, widely regarded as the guardian of Keraniganj, is one of the most well-known and influential political figures in Bangladesh today. Enjoying immense popularity among the people, he has long been recognized as a responsible, visionary, and resolute leader. For decades, he has remained actively engaged in democratic movements, the protection of political rights, and the relentless pursuit of justice for ordinary citizens. Through integrity, sacrifice, and unwavering political commitment, he has earned a dignified and respected position both within his party and in national politics.

Goyeshwar Chandra Roy was born on November 1, 1951, in Keraniganj, Dhaka. His father was Gyanendra Chandra Roy, and his mother was Sumati Roy. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong sense of social awareness, particularly regarding injustice, inequality, and human rights. During his student life, his leadership qualities, moral firmness, and commitment to public welfare became evident—qualities that later guided him toward progressive and people-oriented politics.

In 1978, when the Bangladesh Nationalist Youth Party (Jubo Dal) was formed, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy actively joined nationalist politics. As General Secretary of Jubo Dal, he played a pivotal role in strengthening and organizing the youth wing of the party. Under his leadership, countless young individuals became politically conscious and actively participated in democratic movements. His ability to mobilize and inspire the youth has been widely praised within party circles and beyond.

Throughout his political career, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy has endured repeated imprisonment, repression, and persecution. He has never compromised in the face of authoritarianism, standing firmly for the restoration of democracy, the establishment of voting rights, and the protection of civil liberties. In 2024, he was brutally assaulted by police forces during a political program, collapsing to the ground due to severe injuries. The incident sparked nationwide discussion and raised deep concern among pro-democracy citizens. Yet, such oppression failed to deter him; instead, it further strengthened his resolve and commitment to democratic ideals.

Following the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the Fifth National Parliamentary Election in 1991, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy was appointed State Minister for the Ministry of Environment and Forests under the technocrat quota. During his tenure, he undertook practical and effective initiatives to protect the environment, conserve forests, and safeguard natural resources. His efforts, guided by the principles of sustainable development, are still regarded as positive examples of responsible environmental governance.

In later years, he served as Joint Secretary General of the BNP and currently holds the esteemed position of Member of the Standing Committee—the party’s highest policy-making body. His opinions carry significant weight in party decision-making, political strategy formulation, and responses to major national issues. During critical moments for both the party and the country, he has consistently demonstrated balanced judgment and responsible leadership.

Goyeshwar Chandra Roy is also widely respected as a powerful orator and an effective organizer. His speeches advocating democracy, human rights, freedom of the press, and a transparent electoral system resonate deeply with the general public. Through rallies, public meetings, human chains, and political programs, his logical, courageous, and articulate expressions have played a crucial role in raising political awareness across the nation.

He has contested national parliamentary elections twice, notably as the BNP candidate from the Dhaka-3 constituency. Despite not being elected to Parliament, he has never distanced himself from the people. Remaining firmly grounded in grassroots politics, he continues to honor political accountability and public trust. For the upcoming national parliamentary election, he has received party nomination to contest from a Keraniganj constituency—clear evidence of both his popularity and the party’s confidence in his leadership.

In summary, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy stands as a true patriot and principled statesman—one who prioritizes values, ethics, and public welfare over personal power. Rising above narrow partisan interests, he has consistently taken a fearless stand in favor of democracy, citizens’ rights, and the overall development of the country. His honesty, sacrifice, and leadership have set a positive benchmark in Bangladeshi politics, and the people remain hopeful that he will continue to play a significant and constructive role in shaping the nation’s political future.
