The President of the Republic, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, members of the Advisory Council, the chiefs of the three armed forces, and leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) paid their final respects to BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.Following the completion of her burial with full state honours at Zia Udyan on Wednesday (December 31) afternoon, floral tributes were placed at her grave in succession.
The tribute-paying began with a wreath laid on behalf of President Md. Shahabuddin. This was followed by floral offerings on behalf of the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Members of the Advisory Council subsequently paid their respects one by one.
On behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, placed flowers at the grave of the late leader and offered prayers.
Later, the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force paid separate tributes. Floral wreaths were also laid on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
After the wreath-laying ceremony, a state salute was accorded by the three armed forces. A special prayer (munajat) was then held, seeking eternal peace and forgiveness for the departed soul of Khaleda Zia.
Earlier in the day, her funeral prayers (janaza) were held at Manik Mia Avenue at 3:00 pm. Millions of people from different parts of the country attended the janaza to pay their last respects. During the ceremony, her son and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman sought prayers from the nation for his mother.
Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am on Tuesday (December 30) while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, after suffering from prolonged illness.
