Professor Md Nurul Islam of the Department of Geography and Environment has been appointed vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU).The Ministry of Education issued a notification on Saturday appointing him to the post with the approval of the president and chancellor of the university. According to the notification, Prof Nurul Islam has been relieved of his position as vice-chancellor of Dhaka Central University and appointed JU vice-chancellor under Section 11(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973.

He will serve for four years from the date of joining or until his retirement, whichever comes earlier.

The notification, signed by Md Sultan Ahmed, assistant secretary of the General Universities Branch under the ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division, said he would receive a salary and allowances equivalent to those of his current position, along with other benefits attached to the post under the rules.

As the university’s chief executive officer, the new vice-chancellor will be required to reside on the university campus on a full-time basis.

Prof Nurul Islam was appointed vice-chancellor of Dhaka Central University on March 16, 2026. He also served as pro-vice-chancellor of National University from November 3, 2024.

He obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom in 2011. He completed his BSc (Honours) and MSc (Thesis) in Geography and Environment from Jahangirnagar University in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
