EC's attitude not neutral and fair:Nahid Islam

Alleging that the Election Commission (EC) lacks neutrality and fails to perform its constitutional duties fairly, National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Wednesday called for urgent reform of the commission to ensure credible and fair elections.

“We have expressed our concerns about the Election Commission to the Chief Adviser. In our view, the process through which the commission was formed, as well as its current conduct, is neither neutral nor fair,” Nahid said during a press briefing at the State Guest House Jamuna following a meeting with the Chief Adviser on Wednesday evening.

The NCP convener accused the commission of acting with bias toward certain political parties.

“The commission is behaving like a stepmother to some political parties,” Nahid said. “That is why we urged the government to reform the Election Commission without delay.”

Discussion on July Uprising and ICT Proceedings

During the meeting, NCP also discussed several pressing national issues, including the mass killings during the July Uprising. Nahid stated that the party thanked the government for bringing some army officers allegedly involved in the killings before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) earlier in the day.

Position on National Charter

Regarding NCP's decision not to sign the July National Charter, Nahid clarified that the party has not rejected the charter. Instead, they are seeking assurance on its implementation.

“We informed the Chief Adviser that we will sign the charter once we are assured about how it will be implemented,” he said.

The NCP's remarks add to growing political discourse surrounding electoral integrity and institutional accountability as the country approaches its next national election.
