Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has once again sought unconditional forgiveness from the nation. He made the statement during a views-exchange meeting with journalists in New York on Wednesday (October 22) morning, local time.Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “From 1947 until today, I seek unconditional forgiveness from all those who have suffered because of us.”He continued, “Some people in the nation used to say—let’s assume you did not commit any crimes, but your political decisions were not accepted by the nation. So, at least you could apologize. We have already done so several times. Professor Ghulam Azam did it, Motiur Rahman Nizami did it, and I have also done it myself.” Referring to a recent development, the Jamaat chief said, “When ATM Azharul Islam was released from prison recently, I again stated that not only now, but from 1947 to the present—if anyone has been harmed in any way by Jamaat’s actions, I personally and on behalf of the organization seek unconditional forgiveness. I hope you will forgive us.”
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman added, “We are human beings, and our organization is a human organization. Out of a hundred decisions, one might be wrong. If any decision has caused harm to the nation, we see no shame in seeking forgiveness.”
Responding to criticisms over the wording of previous apologies, he said, “Now people are saying—this language of apology is not acceptable, it should be said in another way. But we have already sought unconditional forgiveness; what more is left to say? Still, I repeat once again—from 1947 to 2025, to anyone who has been hurt in any way by us, I offer my unconditional apology.”
At the event, the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer also called for referendums on issues including proportional representation (PR) ahead of the upcoming national elections. Dr. Rahman said, “There is no uncertainty regarding the election, which is scheduled to be held in February before Ramadan.”
He further assured, “If Jamaat comes to power, the rights of religious minorities will be fully protected as per the Constitution, and they will be able to live in safety and harmony.”
