172 Accused, Including Sheikh Hasina, in Bogura Case

More than a year and a half after a violent incident in Bogura, a case has been filed accusing former President Md. Abdul Hamid, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, and 170 others of attempted murder.The case was filed on Wednesday night (October 22) at Bogura Sadar Police Station by Md. Araf, a resident of Nataipara in Bogura town and son of Mizanur Rahman. In addition to the named accused, between 250 and 300 unidentified individuals have also been implicated in the case.Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasan Basir confirmed the filing of the case.Among the accused are former President Md. Abdul Hamid, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former Education Minister Dipu Moni, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former MP and General Secretary of Bogura District Awami League Ragebul Ahsan Ripu, former MP and President of Bogura District Awami League Mojibur Rahman Majnu, former MP Dorothy Rahman, District Women Awami League President and former MP Khadiza Khatun Shefali, former independent candidate from Bogura-1 (Sariakandi–Sonatola) constituency Shahazadi Alam Lipi, President of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad Dr. Samir Hossain Mishu, General Secretary Dr. Shafi Mahaymen, General Secretary of Bogura City Awami League Rafi Newaz Khan Robin, President of Bogura District Krishak League Alomgir Hossain Badsha, late Awami League leader Abdul Mannan’s brother Raju alias AC Raju, Bogura District Jubo League President Shubhashish Poddar Liton, General Secretary Aminul Islam Dabul, and Councillor Abdul Matin Sarkar.

The case also names several union parishad chairmen, councillors, physicians, and clinic owners. Individuals from Bogura Sadar, Sariakandi, Gabtoli, Shibganj, Sonatola, Shahjahanpur, Dhunat, as well as from Rajshahi and Sirajganj districts, have also been accused.

In his statement, the complainant Araf claimed he was an active participant in the anti-discrimination student movement. He alleged that on August 3, 2024, around noon, while leading a procession on Dattabari–Bargola Road in Bogura town, the accused attacked the protesters with sticks, rods, hockey sticks, sharp weapons, cocktails, and firearms. He stated that he sustained multiple injuries, including 43 bullet wounds, and collapsed on the spot.

He further alleged that after the attack, he was first taken to Banani General Hospital, where doctors refused to admit him. Later, he was taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, where, he claimed, he was again denied treatment. He said he was forced to receive medical care at home, and only after the fall of the government on August 5, 2024, was he admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, OC Hasan Basir said, “The case has been recorded, and necessary legal action will be taken following an investigation.”
