To explore these questions, this correspondent spent nearly three hours speaking with people from different professions and walks of life. The conversations revealed a mixed picture of public opinion regarding both current and former leaders from the BNP, Awami League, and other political parties.
According to local residents, several senior political leaders who have been active in Keraniganj for many years continue to enjoy public respect. Many people praised their contributions during political crises and for their involvement in various social initiatives. At the same time, however, some leaders also faced criticism and allegations from members of the public.
While discussing a former Upazila Chairman, several residents expressed resentment, alleging that he had been involved in extortion and land grabbing. They claimed that such activities had significantly damaged his public image. These allegations could not be independently verified, and the former chairman's comments were not available at the time of reporting.
In contrast, nearly everyone interviewed spoke positively about a former Member of Parliament. None of the respondents made negative remarks or criticisms about him personally. However, several residents alleged that the former Upazila Chairman committed acts of intimidation and abuse while operating under the political patronage of the former MP. Discussions also centered on a current female political leader and a former influential student leader. Several residents further claimed that the former student leader has long been accused of using his influence to obtain financial benefits from various organizations. They alleged that despite having no visible major business, his wealth has grown remarkably within just a few years. Some locals jokingly refer to him as the "Flat Leader," claiming that he or his family owns numerous apartments. However, these claims could not be independently verified, and no statement from the individual concerned was available at the time of reporting.
Similar allegations were also raised against the female political leader. Some residents claimed that, in addition to alleged extortion, discussions persist regarding the alleged sale of party positions. These allegations have not been independently verified. On the other hand, her supporters argued that she has played an important role in strengthening the party organization and participating in various social activities. They also believe that many of the allegations are politically motivated.
Opinions were also divided regarding a veteran political leader. Among all the political figures discussed, youth leader Rezaul Karim Pol received the highest level of positive feedback. People from different backgrounds described him as approachable, active in party affairs, and committed to helping ordinary citizens.
According to local residents, they have not heard of any significant criminal or unethical activities involving Rezaul Karim Pol. Instead, they said he maintains close contact with party activists and regularly stands beside people facing hardship or crisis. Several interviewees remarked that he spends most of his day addressing organizational matters and assisting people in need.
One local businessman said, "A true leader is someone who stands beside people when they need help. We often see Rezaul Karim Pol participating in humanitarian and social activities."
Another resident commented, "He not only keeps in touch with party workers but also listens to the problems of ordinary people. Whenever someone faces illness, an accident, or a family crisis, he tries to provide assistance."
Political observers, however, emphasize that both popularity and allegations should be assessed through impartial investigation and credible evidence. Allegations against any individual should be treated as claims unless proven, while positive public perceptions should likewise be evaluated based on verifiable actions and performance.
Overall, the political atmosphere in Keraniganj reflects an increasingly aware electorate. Residents say they now judge political leaders not only by party affiliation but also by their accessibility, transparency, accountability, and willingness to serve the community.
Taken together, public opinion in Keraniganj presents a political landscape marked by both praise and controversy.
