Floods, landslides and hill runoff triggered by days of heavy rain have affected more than 10 lakh people in seven districts, leaving 51 people dead and 39 injured, the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry said on Sunday (July 12).According to the ministry’s updated figures released at noon, 1,022,963 people have been affected in Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. Floodwater has inundated 58 upazilas, 386 unions and 11 municipalities across the seven districts.
A total of 2,67,918 families remain marooned, while 1,131 shelters have been opened for affected people. The ministry said 44,457 people are now staying in shelters.
Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar are among the worst-hit districts.
In Chattogram, 13 people have died and 12 others have been injured, according to the ministry. Waterlogging and flooding have affected large parts of the district, and relief distribution is continuing.
In Cox’s Bazar, 28 people have died, including 13 Rohingya, while 24 others have been injured. Officials said one person remained missing in the district.
Six people have died and two others have been injured in Bandarban, while Rangamati has reported three deaths. One person has died in Moulvibazar, and one person has been injured in Khagrachhari.
The ministry said rice, cash, dry food, cooked food, corrugated iron sheets and other relief materials have been distributed in the affected districts.
Relief is also being provided with support from the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund and different non-government organisations.
From July 7 to July 12, the government allocated Tk 2.85 crore in cash and 3,250 tonnes of rice for the seven affected districts.
For all 64 districts, the government has allocated Tk 4.60 crore in humanitarian assistance and 8,950 tonnes of rice, the ministry said.
Rescue, shelter and relief operations are continuing in coordination with local administrations, the army, volunteer groups and other agencies.
The ministry said the situation was being monitored and more relief would be allocated if necessary.
