BNP Faces the Dual Challenge of Public Discontent and Online Disinformation

Public health concerns, electricity shortages, law and order, and the spread of misleading information on social media have emerged as four of the most prominent issues in Bangladesh's political landscape. Discussions with political analysts, ordinary citizens, and leaders and activists from various political parties suggest that the worsening dengue and measles situation, power outages, deteriorating public security, and allegations of online disinformation have created fresh political challenges. Observers believe these issues could influence public opinion, political support, and the public image of political parties.

For this report, interviews were conducted with 30 residents from different districts across the country. Most respondents expressed concern over prolonged power outages, the spread of dengue, the law-and-order situation, and misleading information circulating on social media. Many said frequent electricity disruptions in rural areas have made daily life increasingly difficult. They also voiced concern over reports of murder, robbery, mugging, rape, and other criminal activities, saying such incidents have weakened people's sense of security. Several respondents believe these issues could have political consequences.

Many participants noted that social media platforms are flooded with posts, images, and videos related to political parties. However, they said it is often difficult for ordinary users to verify the authenticity of such content. As a result, misinformation spreads easily, creating confusion and contributing to political tensions. Respondents emphasized the need for swift improvements in electricity supply, effective measures to control dengue, and legal action against the deliberate dissemination of false or misleading information.

Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alleged that coordinated disinformation campaigns are being conducted against the party on social media. According to them, posts, photographs, and videos linking BNP members to extortion, assaults, intimidation, and other criminal activities are being widely circulated. They claim that in many instances, incidents that occurred one or two years ago are being presented as recent events. They also alleged that artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in some cases to create manipulated images and videos aimed at misleading the public. However, the accuracy of these allegations could not be independently verified in every case.

Several BNP leaders argued that the party should respond more quickly by providing factual information, taking legal action where appropriate, and strengthening public awareness efforts. They believe delayed responses often allow misleading narratives to spread widely, damaging the party's public image.

Some political analysts observed that social media has become one of the most influential platforms for shaping public opinion. Consequently, false or misleading information targeting any political party or public figure can significantly influence public perceptions. They argue that political parties should not only make allegations but also improve their capacity to verify information, communicate promptly, and respond with credible evidence.

Meanwhile, the country's dengue and measles situation has also become a source of growing public concern. Public health experts say that stronger mosquito-control measures, improved sanitation campaigns, and wider public awareness initiatives are essential during the monsoon season to reduce dengue transmission. They also recommend strengthening routine immunization programs and increasing surveillance in high-risk areas to prevent measles outbreaks. According to health experts, these public health issues have increasingly become part of broader political discussions.

Residents in several rural districts also reported prolonged electricity outages. They said extended interruptions during both day and night have disrupted normal life. Children, elderly people, and individuals with health conditions have been particularly affected during periods of extreme heat. Local residents further stated that agriculture, small businesses, industrial production, and students' education have all suffered due to unreliable electricity supply.

Many villagers expressed growing frustration over the power crisis. While opinions differ regarding political responsibility, many respondents said prolonged public suffering has increased dissatisfaction with the authorities. Political analysts believe that if such hardships continue for an extended period, they could affect public confidence and political popularity.

Concerns over the law-and-order situation were also widely expressed. Many respondents believe incidents of murder, robbery, mugging, theft, rape, and violent crime have increased in different parts of the country. Although determining actual crime trends requires official statistics and independent research, public concern over personal safety has become an important element of political discourse.

At the same time, allegations of misinformation, rumors, and misleading content targeting political parties continue to grow on social media. In addition to political actors, many ordinary citizens emphasized the importance of quickly identifying manipulated images, fabricated videos, and false information. They also called for the effective enforcement of existing laws against the misuse of digital technology while promoting greater digital literacy among the public.

Political analysts argue that the deliberate spread of false information against any political party or individual is harmful to a democratic society. Such practices can deepen political polarization, undermine social cohesion, and create confusion among citizens. They stress that stronger fact-checking mechanisms, responsible journalism, improved digital literacy, and appropriate legal measures are essential to addressing these challenges.

Observers also believe that restoring a stable electricity supply and strengthening public health services should remain key priorities for the government. They warn that prolonged power shortages and unresolved public health challenges could further increase public dissatisfaction. Moreover, when there is a noticeable gap between official statements and people's lived experiences, public trust may gradually erode.

Political analysts note that with local government elections and other political activities approaching, issues affecting public welfare are likely to receive even greater attention. They argue that effective measures to improve electricity supply, public health, public security, and responses to online disinformation could help strengthen public confidence. At the same time, political parties should enhance their ability to communicate quickly, transparently, and with evidence-based information.

Overall, observers believe that public health challenges, electricity shortages, law-and-order concerns, and the spread of misleading information on social media are currently shaping Bangladesh's political landscape. Citizens are seeking reliable electricity, effective healthcare services, personal security, and access to accurate information. They argue that responsible and coordinated efforts by the government, political parties, the media, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders could help strengthen social stability, public trust, and the country's democratic environment.
