Murder, Rape, Drug Abuse and Extortion on the Rise Across Bangladesh

Public concern is mounting across Bangladesh as incidents of murder, rape, extortion, drug trafficking, robbery, and violence stemming from personal and political disputes continue to make headlines. People from various walks of life fear that unless the country's law and order situation improves significantly, social stability could face even greater challenges.

Several high-profile criminal incidents in recent weeks have further intensified public anxiety. The killing of four people in a single incident in Cumilla, the recovery of multiple bodies in Tongi, and the discovery of the body of a Jahangirnagar University student in the Buriganga River have sparked widespread public concern. Although investigations and legal proceedings into these cases are ongoing, many citizens believe that stronger law enforcement, swift investigations, and exemplary punishment for offenders are essential to restoring public confidence.

Recent incidents of murder, rape, drug-related violence, and extortion in different parts of the country have heightened feelings of insecurity among ordinary citizens. According to many residents, the nature and scale of criminal activities appear to be becoming increasingly complex and alarming. Crimes of sexual violence against women, children, and even elderly individuals have drawn particular concern, prompting renewed calls for stronger preventive measures and more effective enforcement of existing laws.

Local residents also allege that extortion has become a persistent problem in many areas. Business owners, transport operators, and small entrepreneurs claim that they are frequently pressured to pay illegal demands by various groups. Many victims reportedly avoid filing formal complaints due to fear of retaliation and concerns about their personal safety.

Meanwhile, the spread of illegal drugs has become another major concern. Community leaders and social observers say that narcotics are now more readily available in both urban and rural areas. They warn that an increasing number of young people are becoming addicted to drugs, with devastating consequences for families and society. In some areas, local residents have attempted to resist drug dealers and users themselves. However, such actions have occasionally led to mob violence, assaults, and even fatalities, raising concerns about people taking the law into their own hands.

Residents in both cities and rural communities also report a rise in robbery, mugging, and attacks on pedestrians. Many women and children are reluctant to travel alone, particularly after dark, while parents say they are increasingly worried about the safety of their children.

Social analysts believe that the deteriorating situation is driven by multiple factors, including economic hardship, unemployment, social instability, family disputes, land conflicts, political rivalry, and intra-party tensions. They also argue that weaknesses in law enforcement and lengthy judicial processes may embolden criminals by reducing the perceived risk of punishment.

Violence arising from family disputes, land ownership conflicts, political rivalries, and personal feuds has also increased in various parts of the country, according to local sources. These conflicts have resulted in deaths, injuries, property damage, and growing divisions within communities.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior police official acknowledged that many officers are currently experiencing psychological pressure while carrying out their duties. According to the official, some field-level officers remain hesitant to make quick operational decisions because of concerns about professional consequences, public criticism, and job security. He believes that this hesitation has, in some cases, affected the effectiveness of crime prevention efforts.

The official, however, emphasized that the police continue to conduct operations, intelligence activities, and regular patrols to maintain public safety and bring offenders to justice.

Rahmatullah, a socially conscious citizen, said that restoring the confidence and operational capacity of the police force is essential. "Providing officers with proper institutional support, professional training, and a secure working environment would significantly improve the country's law and order situation," he said.

Experts argue that improving public safety cannot depend solely on law enforcement agencies. Families, educational institutions, religious organizations, community leaders, and local representatives all have important roles to play in preventing crime. They recommend expanding employment opportunities, promoting sports and recreational activities, and increasing public awareness to help protect young people from drug abuse and criminal involvement.

Analysts have also stressed the importance of greater use of modern technology in crime prevention, including expanded CCTV surveillance, stronger community policing, faster judicial processes, and impartial enforcement of the law regardless of an individual's status or influence.

According to experts and concerned citizens, meaningful improvement in law and order will require coordinated efforts by the government, law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and the public. Alongside strict enforcement of the law, strengthening good governance, transparency, and public awareness will be crucial in building a safer and more secure society.

Above all, people across the country share a common expectation: effective action against crime, impartial enforcement of the law, and the creation of a secure environment where women, children, and all citizens can live and move freely without fear, while ensuring that no criminal remains above the law.
