Ruhul Kabir Rizvi: A Dedicated Lifelong Organiser of the BNP

In Bangladesh's political landscape, some leaders are defined not merely by their official positions but by their unwavering commitment, organisational skills, and perseverance through decades of political struggle. Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is widely regarded by his party members as one of those leaders whose political identity has been shaped by dedication rather than title.

Despite significant political changes and organisational restructuring within the BNP over the years, Rizvi's daily routine has remained largely unchanged. Every morning, he continues to report to the party's central office at Nayapaltan in Dhaka, where he oversees organisational activities, coordinates with party leaders and activists, and communicates the party's official position to the media.

According to BNP leaders and activists, politics is more than a profession for Rizvi—it is a lifelong commitment. Rather than seeking personal comfort or public attention, he has consistently devoted himself to strengthening the party's organisational structure. Throughout years of political unrest, legal battles, arrests, and administrative pressure, he has remained actively involved in the party's activities without interruption.

During the Awami League government's prolonged tenure, when the BNP faced political restrictions, legal challenges, and intensified scrutiny, Rizvi emerged as one of the party's most visible spokespersons. Through regular press briefings and public statements, he articulated the BNP's position on national issues, criticised government policies, and represented the party before the media. Many BNP leaders credit him with helping to keep the party's central office operational during some of its most difficult periods.

Officials and employees at the BNP headquarters describe Rizvi as a guardian-like figure who has stood beside them through both difficult and favourable times. They say he personally supervised the office during periods of political uncertainty, ensured the continuity of organisational activities, and shouldered much of the responsibility himself without expressing frustration or fatigue.

Rizvi's own political journey has also been marked by sacrifice. During the anti-autocracy movement against the military rule of Hussain Muhammad Ershad, he was seriously injured by gunfire. According to party sources, a fragment of that bullet still remains in his body, occasionally causing health complications. Nevertheless, he has continued his political and organisational responsibilities with remarkable determination.

A politician and lawyer by profession, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi currently serves as the Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He also performs the responsibilities of Office Secretary and official spokesperson at the party's central headquarters in Nayapaltan. More recently, he was appointed Member Secretary of the BNP's National Election Management Committee, reflecting the confidence placed in him by the party leadership.

Born at Holy Family Hospital in Dhaka, Rizvi's ancestral home is in Kurigram District. He studied at Bogura Zilla School, Kurigram Government High School, and Bogura Bangla School before attending Rajshahi College and Rajshahi Government City College. He later earned two Master's degrees in Geography and Environment, and History from the University of Rajshahi, followed by a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree.

His political career began through student activism. Initially, he joined the Revolutionary Students Union, where he served as General Secretary of its Rajshahi Government College unit. Following the establishment of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, he joined the organisation and served successively as Publicity Secretary and General Secretary of the Rajshahi University unit. He later became President of the central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.

In 1989, Rizvi was elected Vice President (VP) of the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU), serving until 1990. His student leadership established him as one of the prominent political organisers of his generation.

His role in national politics expanded significantly in March 2016 when he was elected Senior Joint Secretary General at the BNP's Sixth National Council. Since then, he has remained one of the party's principal organisers, playing a key role in formulating political strategies, coordinating organisational activities, and representing the BNP before the national media.

Political observers note that Rizvi has built a reputation as a disciplined organiser capable of maintaining close coordination between the party's grassroots, central leadership, and media operations. During politically challenging periods, his consistent public engagement has made him one of the BNP's most recognisable voices.

Many within the party believe that Rizvi has always prioritised organisational responsibilities over personal publicity. His continuous presence at the party headquarters, even during periods of political repression, has earned him the respect of many party activists, who view him as a symbol of commitment and resilience.

After decades of political activism, organisational leadership, and participation in democratic movements, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi remains one of the BNP's most experienced and dedicated organisers. To many within the party, the BNP's central office, its activists, and its organisational activities have become inseparable from his political life. For that reason, he continues to be recognised as one of the party's most committed and enduring leaders.
