Students from two groups at Dhaka Alia Madrasa clashed repeatedly on Saturday night (November 22), turning the campus into a battleground and leaving several students injured. The violence broke out around 10 pm and continued in phases. The injured students were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where they received initial medical attention. Hospital sources said that at least seven students have been treated so far, and the number of injured could rise.DMCH police camp in-charge Inspector Md Faruk said the injured are: Sadik (21), Moin (22), Elias (21), Omar Faruk (21), Abu Bakkar (22), Walid (22) and Enamul (22).Following the clashes, tension spread across the campus and students began demonstrating. To bring the situation under control, additional police and army personnel were deployed at the madrasa.
Eyewitnesses reported that, as late as 10:45 pm, several students were still confined to a hall, and the administration was working to rescue them.
Chawkbazar Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Abul Khair said there had been chasing and counter-chasing between the two groups. Police rushed to the scene, brought the situation under control and have since deployed extra forces, he added.
According to a source at Chawkbazar Police Station, some students had organised a milad mahfil (religious gathering) at one of the halls. The clashes are believed to have started over the closure of the madrasa canteen at that time and the use of an adjacent field for storing various items.
Alongside police, army personnel are now stationed in the Alia Madrasa area, while a detailed investigation is underway.
