CA reaffirms fair, inclusive polls commitment to UK minister

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday evening reaffirmed that Bangladesh’s upcoming general election will be free, fair, and inclusive, according to a press release from the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.Professor Yunus made the remarks while meeting visiting British Minister for International Development Baroness Jenny Chapman at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka. The leaders discussed a wide range of issues, including the February general election, illegal migration, trade, the Rohingya crisis, and cooperation in aviation and maritime sectors.“The election will be held on schedule in the first half of February. It will be participatory, with a big turnout,” Professor Yunus said, noting that tens of millions of young voters would cast their first ballots after being deprived of voting opportunities during the 16-year period of autocratic rule. He added that the Awami League would not participate in the polls as its activities have been suspended under anti-terrorism laws, and the Election Commission has removed the party from the official list of registered political parties.

Professor Yunus also highlighted the July Charter as “a new beginning” for Bangladesh, reflecting the aspirations of millions involved in the historic July–August uprising last year.

Minister Chapman praised Professor Yunus for his leadership and ongoing dialogue between the National Consensus Commission and political parties. She emphasized safe and legal migration while addressing UK asylum system abuses.

The two leaders also discussed humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees, boosting trade, and strengthening aviation and maritime cooperation. Professor Yunus noted Bangladesh’s acquisition of a British research vessel for maritime studies, while Chapman mentioned a planned visit from the head of Airbus International.

National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman, SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke attended the meeting.
