A heated argument and physical altercation between two party activists at an event attended by the Information Affairs Adviser in Mymensingh have sparked widespread discussion and criticism on social media. Some people familiar with the incident have alleged that a minor incident is being exaggerated in an attempt to create division and internal conflict within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
According to eyewitnesses, an argument initially broke out between two party activists during the event. The situation subsequently became tense and escalated into a physical altercation, creating concerns that the overall atmosphere of the programme could deteriorate. The Information Affairs Adviser then intervened and urged the individuals involved to calm down and refrain from escalating their disagreement.
However, as the situation did not immediately return to normal despite repeated requests, the adviser became angry with one of the activists, according to people present at the event. In an effort to stop him from further disrupting the programme, the adviser asked for his name and firmly warned him to remain calm. Several attendees claimed that the adviser did not use abusive or insulting language against the activist. Rather, they said, he attempted to deter him from further confrontation and restore order at the venue.
The incident later generated a variety of posts and comments on social media. Some of the posts have presented the incident in a manner that portrays the adviser's conduct as the central issue and suggests that he behaved improperly toward party activists. However, several people who were present at the event said that the adviser's intervention was necessary given the circumstances.
According to those attendees, had the adviser not intervened promptly, the argument could have escalated into a more serious confrontation. They believe that his firm intervention helped prevent the situation from deteriorating further and enabled the programme to continue peacefully.
Those familiar with the matter also argued that party activists who are committed to the BNP and respect its organisational discipline should avoid creating disorder at party programmes. Differences of opinion are natural in any organisation, but such differences should be addressed with patience, restraint and mutual respect. Creating a disturbance at a public event and disrupting its environment, they said, cannot be considered consistent with party discipline.
Meanwhile, allegations have emerged that exaggerated and provocative narratives are being circulated on social media over the incident. According to people close to the matter, certain groups seeking to create divisions within the BNP may be attempting to use the incident for political purposes. They alleged that some social media posts are portraying the incident in such a way as to create an impression among the public that there is a major conflict among BNP leaders and activists.
They further argued that some individuals who claim to be expressing concern for the BNP may actually be using the incident to create misunderstanding within the party. Turning an isolated incident into a broader controversy, they said, serves neither the interests of the party nor its organisational unity.
Political observers believe that internal discipline, mutual respect and unity are important for any political organisation. They also noted that presenting an incident selectively or without adequate context on social media can negatively affect the public image of a political party. They therefore called for greater caution and responsibility in discussing such incidents online.
Several senior activists present at the event told this reporter that the situation could have developed into a much more serious incident had the Information Affairs Adviser not intervened. They credited his timely intervention with preventing further escalation and bringing the situation under control.
The activists also urged all levels of BNP leaders and workers to remain vigilant against misinformation and politically motivated campaigns on social media. At the same time, they stressed the importance of verifying facts before sharing or commenting on any incident and of maintaining organisational discipline and unity.
