BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has alleged that the opposition is attempting to undermine democracy by taking to the streets with a “long march” programme just six months after the formation of parliament.He made the remarks at an informal press briefing held at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday afternoon.
Rizvi said the opposition had been using personally offensive and objectionable language against important members of the government in connection with its street-based “long march” programme, while the party was allegedly encouraging such activities.
“Words that cannot be uttered before the public are being used openly,” he said, describing the alleged remarks as criminal acts.
He further alleged that when legal action is taken against such propaganda, the opposition portrays it as repression and uses the issue as an excuse to undermine democracy.
Speaking about the country’s fuel situation, Rizvi said the opposition was merely criticising the government without offering any constructive proposals to resolve the crisis.
“They have chosen the path of conspiracy outside parliament instead of providing suggestions on the issue in parliament,” he said.
Rizvi also alleged that the opposition was attempting to conceal the government’s achievements, including the increase in the country’s foreign exchange reserves, instead of presenting such positive developments before the people.
He said although the opposition had been staging street protests alleging government failure, ordinary people were not viewing its role positively.
“Instead of raising their demands and proposals in parliament as a responsible opposition, they have chosen the streets,” Rizvi said, adding that the move was essentially an attempt to overshadow the government’s overall development activities.
BNP anniversary programmes
At the briefing, Rizvi said the BNP’s five-day programme marking its founding anniversary had been successfully completed.
He urged party leaders and activists to immediately remove all billboards and banners installed as part of the anniversary celebrations.
Rizvi said the party workers should respect the prime minister’s directive on maintaining a clean environment and remove the campaign materials without delay.
BNP Joint Secretary General Advocate Abdus Salam Azad, Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Sopu, Mahmudur Rahman Sumon, Asadul Karim Shaheen, Tarikul Islam Tenzing and Dr Zahidul Kabir were present at the briefing.
