M Abdullah is a prominent and widely respected senior journalist in Bangladesh. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he has played an important role in news reporting, investigative journalism, column writing, and the struggle to protect the rights and interests of journalists. Alongside working as a reporter for various newspapers, he has also taken on leadership responsibilities in several major professional organizations representing journalists.

M Abdullah’s career in journalism has been marked by numerous challenges and adversities. He has covered events from the field, working through scorching heat, heavy rain, storms, and floods to gather news and fulfill his professional responsibilities. At various points in his career, he has faced pressure from those in power, harassment, and allegations of being subjected to false cases because of his journalistic work. Yet none of these obstacles could force him away from the profession. Instead, such experiences have strengthened his commitment to journalism and sharpened his voice as a journalist.

Over the course of his career, M Abdullah has served in important positions at several media organizations, including Daily Inqilab and Daily Amar Desh. He spent many years serving as the city editor and columnist of Amar Desh. He later took on responsibilities as the newspaper’s Joint Editor and Chief Reporter. Alongside his professional work in the newsroom, he has remained highly active on social media, where he regularly writes about contemporary national issues and expresses his views on matters of public interest.

M Abdullah has also made significant contributions to protecting the rights, dignity, and professional interests of journalists. He is a member of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) and has served as a member of its Executive Committee. He has also held various positions in the Dhaka Union of Journalists and served as an elected president of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).

Throughout his career in journalism leadership, he has remained vocal on issues concerning journalists, including professional security, salaries and benefits, job security, and other legitimate demands. His involvement in the movement for journalists’ rights has earned him recognition among many members of the country’s journalism community.

Following the political change of August 5, 2024, M Abdullah served as the Director General/Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust. Different sources have referred to the position by different titles. During his tenure, he focused on supporting journalists facing financial hardship, illness, and other difficult circumstances. His efforts to reach out to journalists across the country and provide assistance when needed have been remembered with appreciation by many in the journalism community.

M Abdullah’s contribution to journalism extends beyond news reporting. He has consistently spoken out on issues related to democracy, freedom of expression, and the rights of journalists. Through his writings and social media activities, he continues to raise his voice against irregularities, authoritarian practices, and forces he considers detrimental to democracy and the national interest.
