Rural Electrification Officials Announce Indefinite Mass Leave Amid Power Crisis Concerns

Officials and employees of the Rural Electrification Board (REB) have announced an indefinite mass leave starting Sunday (September 7) to press for four key demands, including reform in rural electricity management, elimination of workplace discrimination, and cessation of harassment measures. The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Saturday (September 6) by Anju Rani Malakar, Joint Secretary of the Rural Electrification Association.Anju Rani Malakar stated that despite multiple assurances from the government, including committee formation and various attempts to resolve the crisis, the Ministry of Power has failed to implement any concrete measures. She added that officials and employees involved in the movement are being harassed through dismissals, transfers, and other punitive actions.“This situation has created widespread dissatisfaction among Rural Electrification officials and staff,” Malakar said. She also demanded the cancellation of dismissal orders for employees unfairly removed from their posts and called for administrative and legal action against corrupt officials and employees within the Rural Electrification Board.
