Non-MPO Teachers Dispersed by Sound Grenades and Water Cannons

Police used sound grenades and water cannons to disperse non-MPO teachers demonstrating in Dhaka for inclusion under the government’s Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme. The teachers, who were attempting to march toward the Secretariat, were forced to retreat amid the police action. The incident took place around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday (November 9), as protesters began marching from the National Press Club toward the Secretariat. Several teachers were reportedly injured, and police detained a number of demonstrators.

The non-MPO teachers have been staging a sit-in protest in front of the National Press Club since November 2, demanding that all teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions across the country be brought under the MPO system.

Earlier, in October, the teachers and staff observed a 20-day demonstration at the same venue with the same demand. They suspended that movement after receiving assurances from the authorities.

However, with their demands still unmet, the non-MPO teachers have resumed their protest, calling for immediate action from the government.
