China eyes major jute-based investment in Bangladesh

Chinese investors have expressed keen interest in expanding investments in green technology, jute, textiles and pharmaceuticals to support the manufacturing transformation envisioned by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. The commitment came from Yang Dongning, Vice-President of the Export-Import Bank of China, during a meeting with the Chief Adviser at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing. She was accompanied by Dr. Ma Jun, President of the Institute of Finance and Sustainability.Yang Dongning said that while China has traditionally invested heavily in Bangladesh’s major infrastructure projects, its focus is now shifting toward direct manufacturing sectors. These include rooftop solar panels and large-scale jute-based industries to produce green energy, bio-fertiliser and plastic alternatives. The Exim Bank is also interested in financing these emerging areas.

Dr. Ma Jun highlighted Bangladesh’s traditional jute industry as a major potential sector, noting that Chinese companies are prepared to use up to one million tonnes of jute to produce eco-friendly products. “There are opportunities for joint ventures in jute with Chinese financing,” he said.

Welcoming China’s growing interest, Yunus said that Chinese investment could help Bangladesh become a manufacturing hub for exports to developed nations, including China.

He emphasised pharmaceuticals, healthcare and solar energy as high-potential sectors and encouraged China to relocate manufacturing plants to Bangladesh, particularly in the southeast, which offers strategic access to regional markets.

He also proposed railway connectivity between Bangladesh and southern China to support relocated industries. The meeting concluded with the Chief Adviser expressing condolences over the recent apartment fire tragedy in Hong Kong.
