The apolitical and humanitarian image of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society is currently facing a severe crisis. Shocking revelations regarding the seizure of board positions, widespread financial irregularities, and internal conspiracies have triggered intense outrage among the organization's officers, employees, and volunteers across the country.
Seizure of Power by Expelled Doctors and Electoral Conspiracy
Serious allegations have surfaced against two doctors—Dr. Rafiqul Mahbub Labu and Dr. Mofakkharul Islam—who were previously expelled from the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a BNP-backed organization, for anti-party activities and corruption. Taking advantage of political shifts and employing deceitful tactics, they managed to secure key positions on the Managing Board of the Red Crescent Society. A deep-rooted conspiracy allegedly centered around the board election for the 2026–2028 term scheduled for September 17.
According to standard procedures, each district unit executive committee was supposed to unanimously nominate two delegates to participate in the national election. However, it is alleged that the two doctors, alongside their PS Kazi Asad (a former Chhatra League cadre) and Enamul Haque, Deputy Director of the Unit Affairs Department (a cousin of former cabinet minister Motahar Hossain), engineered a blueprint to manipulate the election. Their primary objective was to secure uncontested wins for Labu and Mofakkhar in the Vice-Chairman and Treasurer posts, respectively, and subsequently table a no-confidence motion against the Chairman within a month to forcibly take control of the organization.
Cancellation of the Election and Legal Entanglements
Upon receiving information regarding the plot from delegates of various districts, the Chairman of the Society, Barrister Abdus Salam, initiated an investigation. After verifying the authenticity of the claims, he issued an official order cancelling all election-related activities. In response, on the advice of the conspirators and aiming to defame the Chairman and the Society, the Vice-Chairman and Treasurer filed a court case the following day. Notably, the tenure of the Ad-hoc Managing Board automatically expired on the midnight of September 19.
BDT 35 Crore Corruption Allegation and Internal Unrest
Internal sources within the Society reveal that Deputy Director Enamul Haque faces allegations of corruption amounting to approximately BDT 35 crore. His name is also linked to a financial scandal involving the Rajbari district unit, which was suppressed for a long time. Furthermore, his younger sister holds an influential position in the Society's RFL Department.
Additionally, an official named Kamal—who reportedly operated as an ally of a specific political clique for the past 25 years—is now accused of taking advantage of political leverage to siphon thousands of Taka daily from the Society’s funds under the guise of communication expenses.
Serious allegations have also been leveled against Asif Almas (PS-2 to the Chairman) and Nizam Uddin (HR Coordinator). They stand accused of concealing past political loyalties, attempting to retain their posts through flattery, and leaking sensitive internal information.
Demands for Removal and Legal Action
Officers, staff, and volunteers nationwide have united to protect the Red Crescent Society from this malicious circle. To restore public trust and protect the institution's integrity, there is a growing demand for the immediate removal, thorough investigation, and strict legal action against Enamul Haque, Kamal, Kazi Asad, Asif Almas, Nizam Uddin, and all others involved in these illicit activities.
