The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is set to gradually evaluate its long-serving, tested and dedicated leaders and activists who have remained active in the party’s political movements and struggles, according to a senior party leader. Discussions within the party have reportedly intensified over the recognition of those who endured legal cases, attacks, arrests, imprisonment and various forms of political repression while working for the party during the past 17 years.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the BNP leader said Chairman Tarique Rahman is well aware of the contributions made by those who stood by the party during difficult times, worked at great personal risk and continued organisational activities despite political obstacles.
“He has not forgotten anyone’s sacrifice or contribution. However, the evaluation will be carried out gradually through an appropriate process,” the leader said.
He said the tested and dedicated leaders and activists are the real strength of the BNP. Those who have remained loyal to the party and stood by the organisation through difficult circumstances will be considered in due course.
According to the leader, party workers should remain patient and maintain organisational discipline as the leadership proceeds with the evaluation process.
He further said there is no intention within the party leadership to undervalue anyone. Rather, future decisions regarding responsibilities and recognition will take into account an individual’s contribution to the party, role at different stages of the political movement and sacrifices made over the years.
The party is particularly taking into consideration the contributions of those who faced lawsuits, arrests, imprisonment, attacks and political repression during the past decade and a half, he said.
Many people who have been involved with BNP politics for years do not view the party merely as a political organisation, the leader said. Rather, their continued involvement has been driven by their faith in the party’s ideals and leadership.
He said BNP activists stood by the organisation during difficult times out of their commitment to the political philosophy of late President Ziaur Rahman and their support for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
“Those who stood by the party during its difficult days are among the key pillars of its future organisational strength. Therefore, there is no reason for anyone to become frustrated or lose patience,” the leader said.
He added that the party’s dedicated leaders and activists would be appropriately evaluated over time on the basis of their competence, experience, sacrifices and organisational contributions.
Although discussions are continuing within the party over the distribution of responsibilities and organisational evaluation, the BNP leader urged party members to remain patient and united.
According to him, future party decisions will prioritise organisational realities, long-standing contributions and tested leadership rather than emotion.
He said the contributions of every BNP leader and activist are part of the party’s political history and should not be forgotten.
“Those who stood by the party during difficult times will be appropriately recognised and given due organisational importance in the future,” he said, urging party leaders and activists to remain united and maintain their faith in and commitment to the BNP.
