Islami Andolan Bangladesh staged rallies across all districts, upazilas, and thana towns on Friday (September 26), pressing for five-point demands including holding the upcoming national election under the Proportional Representation (PR) system. The program was part of a series of simultaneous movements announced earlier.Speaking at pre-rally gatherings, leaders said the July uprising was not merely for a change of government but aimed at permanently abolishing authoritarian rule from the country. “Students and people took to the streets and sacrificed their lives with the vision of eradicating tyranny forever,” they said, stressing that the post-July political settlement must act as a safeguard against authoritarianism.
They argued that PR is the most effective electoral system to achieve this and insisted the next general election must be held under the PR method. The speakers further warned that those spreading misinformation about PR would be regarded by the nation as covert or potential fascists.
The five demands raised by Islami Andolan Bangladesh are:
-
Ensuring a legal basis for the July Charter.
-
Justice for genocide.
-
Bringing collaborators of fascism under trial and banning them during judicial proceedings.
-
Guaranteeing a level playing field in elections.
-
Holding the next national election under the Proportional Representation system.
