Zainul Abdin Faruk is a well-known name in Bangladesh’s political arena for many years. He is not only a politician but also regarded by the people of Noakhali as a familiar figure, a courageous voice, and a symbol of trust. Throughout his political life, he has faced numerous movements, struggles, lawsuits, attacks, and adversity. Despite this, his relationship with the people has always remained sincere and deep. According to his close associates, he is a very simple, open-hearted, and good-natured person who has no pretension. He speaks directly what he believes, without hesitation. Because of this frankness, he has both been criticized and respected in political circles.
Ordinary people do not fear him; rather, they respect and love him. This is because he has always stood beside the people, extending a helping hand in times of joy and sorrow. Locals say that when Zainul Abdin Faruk visits the area, he does not follow formal protocols. He may visit someone’s home, a shop, or even a farmer’s field to inquire about their well-being. He listens carefully to people’s daily lives, family problems, and needs.
One of his greatest qualities, as described by locals, is his secular and humanitarian outlook. He does not consider who voted for him or who did not, nor does he distinguish between political parties or religions. To him, everyone in his area is equally important. He considers all people as his relatives—some as brothers, some as friends. Because of this sincerity and informal approach, he has earned a place in the hearts of ordinary people for a long time.
Birth and Early Life
Zainul Abdin Faruk was born on 10 December 1949 in Noakhali District, Bangladesh. From childhood, he was outspoken, courageous, and actively involved in social activities. His interest in politics developed during his student life, and later he established a significant position in national politics.
Political Rise
He gained national recognition through the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). He was first elected as a Member of Parliament in 1991. After that, he was consecutively elected in the 5th Parliament (1991), 6th Parliament (February 1996), 7th Parliament (June 1996), 8th Parliament (2001), and 9th Parliament (2008) as a BNP candidate. If he wins the 12 February 2026 election, it will mark his sixth term as a Member of Parliament.
He has represented the Noakhali-1 and Noakhali-2 constituencies. During his tenure as an MP, he worked for local development, infrastructure improvement, and the protection of public rights. In politics, he became widely known as a vocal and outspoken leader. His statements often created discussion in political circles, but he always stood firm in his position.
Role as Opposition Chief Whip
In 2009, he served as the Opposition Chief Whip in the National Parliament. During this time, he gained attention for strongly criticizing government activities. He was one of the most vocal opposition figures both inside Parliament and on the streets.
One of the most notable incidents in his political career occurred in July 2011. During an anti-government movement, the BNP announced a general strike on 6 and 7 July. During the strike, BNP Members of Parliament led a procession in front of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) building, led by Zainul Abdin Faruk.
Clashes broke out between police and the protesters. It is alleged that under the leadership of then police officials Harun Or Rashid and Bipul Kumar Sarkar, police attacked him. According to eyewitnesses, he was severely beaten with batons and rifle butts, leaving him seriously injured and bloodied. He had to leave the scene in critical condition.
This incident created widespread political reaction in the country. The BNP claimed it was an attempt to silence the opposition. Later, Zainul Abdin Faruk filed a case against the involved police officers and also filed a defamation lawsuit worth 10 billion BDT against the government. However, the case was eventually dismissed in court.
Cases, Arrests, and Political Pressure
In Bangladesh’s political reality, opposition leaders often face cases and arrests, and Zainul Abdin Faruk is no exception. On 3 July 2013, he was arrested during an anti-government movement on charges of sabotage. Several cases were filed against him, after which he secured bail from the court.
His political colleagues believe that he has always been vocal against the government, which is why he has faced political pressure and harassment. Despite difficult circumstances, he never deviated from his political stance or from the ideology of the BNP.
The 2024 Case
Following the fall of the Awami League government through a student-public uprising in 2024, he again came into the spotlight. On 19 August, he filed an attempted murder case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka. The case concerned the 2011 attack incident, naming the involved police officers as accused.
Harun Or Rashid and Bipul Kumar Sarkar were included as defendants. The case was filed under several sections of the Penal Code. Many view this as a legal step against long-standing political repression.
Personality and Popularity
Zainul Abdin Faruk is often described as an angry or outspoken person. However, his close associates say he is actually very simple, sincere, and warm-hearted. He has no hypocrisy. He speaks directly what he thinks, without hesitation. This frankness has made him both criticized and respected in political circles.
Locals say he deeply feels the suffering of people, which is why he is loved as one of their own. Many believe that while he may be misunderstood from a distance, his true humanity is understood when seen up close.
