In Bangladesh’s political landscape, many leaders emerge during favorable times but retreat when adversity strikes. Yet there are a few individuals whose loyalty, courage, and humanity rise above their political identity. Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas is one of those rare figures — a man known not only as a politician but also as a steadfast companion who stood firmly beside his party during prolonged political hardship.
Over the past one and a half decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has faced immense political pressure, including lawsuits, attacks, arrests, political restrictions, and organizational crises. During those difficult years, many distanced themselves from the party. However, among the few who quietly and selflessly remained beside BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas.
He was never a loud or attention-seeking politician. Instead, he worked behind the scenes, contributing through organizational activities, political coordination, and unwavering support for party leaders and activists. At a time when many well-known political figures became silent, Shimul Biswas remained active, committed, and loyal.
Party activists often say, “A person’s true character is revealed in times of crisis.” By that standard, Shimul Biswas has proven himself as a tested and trusted leader.
From a Traditional Family to People-Oriented Politics
Shimul Biswas was born into an educated and socially respected family in Kuthipara, Pabna. His father, the late Azizul Islam Biswas, was known as a principled and socially conscious individual. His grandfather, Alhaj Ahed Ali Biswas, was a renowned contractor and philanthropist during the British era. From his family, he inherited values of humanity, responsibility, and social commitment.
From an early age, he closely observed the struggles and hardships of ordinary people. These experiences later shaped his political and social philosophy.
After studying at Gopal Chandra Institute, Edward College, and Shaheed Bulbul College, he earned a law degree from Rajshahi University. During his student life, his leadership qualities became evident. He was elected Vice President (VP) of Shaheed Bulbul College consecutively three times, reflecting both his popularity and organizational capability.
However, his political philosophy was distinct. Rather than viewing politics as a path to power, he saw it as a means to bring positive change to people’s lives.
From Lawyer to Voice of the Working Class
After completing his law degree at Rajshahi University, Shimul Biswas joined the Pabna Bar Association. Yet he did not confine himself to courtroom practice alone. He became actively involved in advocating for the rights of working-class people.
Under his initiative, labor federations and transport workers’ unions were established. For many years, he worked to ensure workers’ rights, safety, and organizational opportunities. As a result, he became a symbol of trust not only in politics but also among laborers and ordinary working people.
Proven Competence in State Responsibilities
In 2002, Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas was appointed Chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC). At that time, the institution was burdened with financial losses. Through his administrative efficiency, honesty, and foresight, the organization returned to profitability.
Even while serving in a state position, he demonstrated that beyond political identity, he was also an efficient administrator. His contributions to river route development, ferry terminal improvements, and transportation modernization are still remembered by many concerned individuals.
In particular, his efforts to improve transportation connectivity between Pabna and Dhaka earned widespread appreciation from local residents.
A Trusted Associate of Khaleda Zia
Inspired by the ideals of late President Ziaur Rahman, Shimul Biswas joined the BNP in 1999. Later, he began serving as a Special Assistant to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
This role was not merely administrative but also politically significant. During some of the most difficult periods in BNP’s political history, he played an important role in managing Khaleda Zia’s official activities, communications, and organizational coordination.
Fear of political cases, administrative pressure, or personal risks never pushed him away from the party. On the contrary, he became even more active during challenging times.
Many grassroots BNP leaders believe that “a leader’s true identity is revealed not during good times, but during hardship.” In that sense, Shimul Biswas has established himself as a proven and dependable political figure.
A Humanitarian Chapter Beyond Politics
Perhaps the brightest aspect of Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas’s life is his humanitarian work.
In the name of his family, he established the “Alhaj Ahed Ali Biswas Human Welfare Trust.” Through this trust, he has contributed significantly to education, religious institutions, rehabilitation for the homeless, and employment generation.
He donated nearly 110 acres of land to establish schools, colleges, madrassas, mosques, technical institutions, libraries, and orphanages. Through his initiatives, more than 3,600 homeless families received shelter, while employment opportunities were created for over 3,000 people. He also helped establish more than a hundred mosques and madrassas.
These are not merely statistics; they represent the practical reflection of one man’s commitment to society.
At a time when development is often reduced to political slogans, Shimul Biswas’s efforts stand out for their quiet yet lasting impact.
Simple in Personal Life, Firm in Principles
Despite coming from a wealthy family, Shimul Biswas leads a remarkably simple and modest life. He values human relationships more than political glamour and power.
His wife, Parvin Afroze Tanu, has long been a silent companion in his political and social journey. Their two children are also progressing successfully in their respective fields.
According to those close to him, “Shimul Biswas’s greatest strength is his humanity.”
Why Shimul Biswas Still Remains Relevant
In Bangladesh’s political culture, loyalty is often criticized as being driven by personal interests. In that reality, leaders like Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas are considered exceptions.
He does not attract attention through dramatic speeches, social media campaigns, or political theatrics. Rather, he has distinguished himself through years of quiet dedication, standing beside people in difficult times, and maintaining strong humanitarian values.
Within BNP politics, he is known not merely as a former Member of Parliament or Special Assistant, but as a trusted companion during the party’s most difficult days.
The political life of Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas is not simply a story of power; it is a story of responsibility and commitment. At a time when politics is often viewed as a tool for personal gain, he continues to believe that politics can still be a sacred responsibility dedicated to serving people.
He has proven that true leadership is not built solely by holding positions of power, but by standing beside people in times of crisis. That is why, to many BNP leaders and activists, Shimul Biswas is not just a politician — he is a living symbol of courage, loyalty, and humane politics during difficult times.
