The government has appointed new administrators to six city corporations across Bangladesh, including the two city corporations in Dhaka. The Local Government Division issued an official notification on Sunday (February 22) confirming the appointments.In a departure from previous practice, political figures have been appointed as administrators instead of civil servants.Md. Abdus Salam has been appointed as the Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, while Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan has been appointed as the Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation.

The other appointments are as follows:

• Nazrul Islam Monju – Khulna City Corporation

• Abdul Kaiyum Chowdhury – Sylhet City Corporation

• Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khan – Narayanganj City Corporation

• Md. Shawkat Hossain Sarkar – Gazipur City Corporation

According to the notification, the appointments have been made under Sub-section (1) of Section 25A of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024. The administrators will serve as full-time officials until the respective city corporations are formally constituted.

The notification further states that under Sub-section (3) of Section 25A of the ordinance, the appointed administrators will exercise the powers and perform the responsibilities of the Mayor. They will receive allowances in accordance with the relevant rules.
