We don't want to do divisive politics anymore: Jamaat Amir

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has expressed interest in contesting the Dhaka-15 seat, pledging to build the constituency into an ideal area by solving local problems if he gets the opportunity. He said development would be ensured through peaceful and dignified politics. He made the remarks on Wednesday (January 28) at noon while conducting public outreach in Dhaka-15 at North Kafrul High School in the capital.Shafiqur Rahman said he holds the area in his heart, adding that he dreams for the constituency as he does for the country and feels a special sense of responsibility as he will contest from there.

He said he is trying to take every local problem into his mind and, if Allah gives him the opportunity and he is elected by the people’s verdict, he will make his optimum effort to develop the area as an ideal constituency.

Referring to his rivals, he said he has one special opponent there and others as well, and welcomed them.

He called on all candidates to campaign politely, peacefully and in a disciplined manner, to respect one another and to present their respective positions to the people.

He said the trust should remain with the people.

Pointing to local problems, he said Dhaka-15 faces waterlogging, road issues and shortages of schools and colleges, and has no university, no quality hospital, and no playground, park, walkway or suitable place for exercise.

Shafiqur Rahman said a plan has been prepared to address the problems, adding that the solutions would be pursued with everyone and seeking prayers and cooperation from local residents.

Speaking in the broader national context, he said they want to build a forward-looking Bangladesh based on justice and fairness, and do not want to engage in divisive politics over past issues, adding that they want everyone to move forward together.

After the programme, he wished for the improvement of the educational institution and said he was moved by the students’ warm reception.
