Mohammad Abdul Matin takes charge as Daily Kalbela’s Australia Country Editor

SYDNEY: Mohammad Abdul Matin, a journalist with more than three decades of experience spanning journalism, education and community service, has taken charge as the Australia Country Editor of Daily Kalbela. Alongside his new editorial responsibility, Matin serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reliable College of Nursing (RCN), an Australian-registered education institution.Matin began his journalism career with The Daily Star, one of Bangladesh’s leading English-language newspapers. Over the course of his career, he has worked with various national and international media organisations and covered major state institutions and political affairs, including the Bangladesh Secretariat, Jatiya Sangsad, Prime Minister’s Office and Bangabhaban.

His involvement in journalism and the media has continued in Australia. He is the editor of Australia-based Bangla online news outlet Bidesh-Bangla and president of the Australia Bangladesh Journalists Association (ABJA). He is also a member of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) and the Local & Independent News Association (LINA). Earlier, he served as general secretary of the Sydney Press and Media Council.

Beyond journalism, Matin has extensive experience in education and professional services. He serves as a Justice of the Peace (JP) in New South Wales and as a Qualified Education Agent Counsellor (QEAC). For years, he has been involved in matters concerning international students, education and training, and the wider Bangladeshi community in Australia.

His professional experience also extends to Australia’s private sector. He has been associated with Amazon Australia’s BW6 operations in non-inventory procurement operations. Earlier, he completed a Universal Procedures Upskill Certificate from Amazon Robotics University, focusing on skills development related to the operation and maintenance of the robotics floor.

His professional career therefore spans journalism, education, administration, technology and community service.

Matin has also been actively involved in social, cultural, professional and community welfare initiatives within the Bangladeshi community in Australia. Alongside his leadership in journalism organisations, he has participated in initiatives focused on education, public awareness and community development.

Through ABJA, he has also contributed to building a professional platform for journalists, writers, poets, literary figures, academics and media professionals. The organisation’s activities include professional cooperation, community welfare and public service initiatives.

His contributions to journalism, education and community service have received recognition in Australia. Among the honours he has received are a ‘Covid Hero Award’ from Federal Minister Tony Burke in recognition of public service and community activities during the Covid-19 pandemic, and a ‘Pandemic Hero Award’ from the City of Canterbury-Bankstown.

He has also received recognition from Wendy Elizabeth Lindsay, then Member of the New South Wales Parliament for East Hills, as well as from the Mayor of Canterbury-Bankstown City Council.

More recently, the Bangladesh Association of Australia honoured him for his contribution to journalism, education and community service in Australia over more than two decades.

Matin’s professional journey, which began in journalism in 1989, has expanded over more than three decades across media, education, professional organisations, technology and community service.

From covering major national institutions and political affairs in Bangladesh to working in diaspora media, leading a professional journalists’ organisation in Australia and contributing to education and training management, his career has encompassed a wide range of professional responsibilities.

As Australia Country Editor of Daily Kalbela, Matin is covering news and developments concerning Bangladeshis and the wider South Asian diaspora in Australia, while also reporting on significant Australian national, social, economic, migration, education and community issues for Bangladeshi readers.
