A New Style of Politics Under Tarique Rahman

In recent times, many political analysts and citizens believe that a new trend and culture in politics is gradually emerging in Bangladesh. Since coming to power, several unusual and noteworthy initiatives have been observed at different levels of the government and administration. Observers say these initiatives appear different from the traditional political culture that has existed in the country for many years.

In particular, efforts to promote simplicity in governance, strengthen accountability, and increase direct communication between political leaders and the public are being highlighted as key features of this emerging political approach. Many analysts believe that the political vision of Tarique Rahman has played a significant role in shaping this new direction.

According to political observers, a new environment seems to be developing in which ministers, members of parliament, and other high-ranking political figures are attempting to interact and move among the public in a more ordinary and accessible manner. Many people have begun to describe this change as the beginning of a “new style of politics.”

Leaders Moving Beyond Strict Protocol

For many years, political leaders in Bangladesh were often seen surrounded by strict security arrangements and official protocols. Ministers and lawmakers typically traveled with large security convoys and maintained considerable distance from ordinary citizens.

However, observers say that a different picture has started to emerge in recent weeks. In several cases, ministers and members of parliament have been seen using public transport and interacting with people in a much more informal way.

Although the new government has not yet completed even a month in office, many citizens believe that some positive changes in political behavior and administrative culture are already becoming visible.

In the past, people frequently expressed frustration over allegations of corruption, extravagance, and misuse of power by political leaders. As a result, public trust in politics had been weakened. Against that backdrop, recent developments are being interpreted by some observers as signs of a possible shift toward a more modest and people-oriented political culture.

Member of Parliament Traveling Like an Ordinary Passenger

One recent incident on the metro rail in Dhaka has attracted widespread attention on social media.

Alamgir Mohammad Mahfuzullah Farid, the Member of Parliament from Cox’s Bazar-2, was traveling on the metro rail like an ordinary passenger. On the night of March 9, around 8:00 PM, he boarded a train heading toward Uttara and was standing among other commuters.

During the journey, he reportedly began to feel unwell. Seeing this, a few fellow passengers offered him their seats so that he could sit down. At that moment, none of the passengers realized that he was a member of parliament. They simply acted out of courtesy and concern for a fellow traveler.

Later, a passenger shared the incident in a Facebook post, which quickly spread across social media. Only afterward did many people learn that the individual involved was actually a lawmaker.

The incident sparked significant discussion online. Many users described it as an encouraging sign of changing political attitudes and greater closeness between political leaders and ordinary citizens.

Surprise Inspection of a Land Office

Efforts to strengthen accountability within the public administration have also been observed in recent days.

In a notable example, Kaiser Kamal conducted an unexpected visit to a land office in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.

When he arrived at the office during official working hours, he found that the office was closed and no officials or employees were present. Instead of leaving, he waited outside the office while sitting on a small stool.

After waiting for nearly thirty minutes, a person arrived and opened the office. Even after entering, many of the responsible officials were still absent.

During this time, he spoke with a citizen who had come to receive government services and tried to understand the difficulties people face while seeking administrative assistance.

According to reports, he later directed that disciplinary action be taken against the officials responsible for neglecting their duties. The incident took place on March 4 in the Siddhirganj area of Narayanganj.

Minister Buying Metro Tickets in Line

Another unusual scene was observed when the Road Transport Minister visited the metro rail system.

On March 8, the minister traveled from the Secretariat Metro Station toward Uttara. Instead of using any special arrangements, he stood in line with ordinary passengers to purchase a ticket before boarding the train.

Many passengers were surprised by the sight, as people are generally accustomed to seeing ministers traveling with special security arrangements and privileges.

During the visit, he also inspected the metro rail depot located in the Diabari area. After the inspection, he interacted with passengers and listened to their opinions regarding the metro rail service.

Passengers shared both their appreciation and concerns about the service, and the minister reportedly listened carefully to their feedback.

Signs of a Changing Political Culture

Political analysts believe that although these incidents may appear small individually, they could signal a broader shift in political culture.

For decades, politicians in many South Asian countries have often remained distant from ordinary citizens. However, if political leaders begin to engage directly with the public, it may contribute to greater transparency and accountability within government institutions.

Some observers argue that such gestures can help rebuild public confidence in political leadership.

Reactions From the Public

Among the general public, reactions to these developments have been mixed but largely positive.

Many people on social media have expressed hope that if political leaders truly adopt a simpler and more people-oriented lifestyle, it could bring a positive transformation to the country’s political culture.

At the same time, some observers caution that symbolic gestures alone will not be enough. They argue that such initiatives must continue consistently over time to produce meaningful change.

Expectations for Greater Accountability

Analysts say that beyond symbolic actions, deeper reforms in administrative practices are essential.

Ensuring punctual attendance in government offices, improving service delivery, and taking strict action against corruption are among the measures that experts believe are necessary for lasting change.

If visible progress can be achieved in these areas, public trust in the political system may gradually increase.

A Major Test Ahead

Overall, many observers believe that an attempt is being made to introduce a different political approach in Bangladesh.

At the center of this discussion is Tarique Rahman, whose leadership is widely seen as shaping efforts to establish a new culture within politics and public administration.

However, analysts emphasize that the true success of this transformation will depend on how consistently these initiatives are implemented over the long term.

If political leaders can genuinely remain close to the people, ensure accountability in governance, and take effective action against corruption, many believe that Bangladesh could enter a new chapter of positive political change in the years ahead.
