Desired democracy begins in Bangladesh, PM tells JS

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told parliament that the country’s desired democracy had begun from Thursday as the 13th Jatiya Sangsad held its first sitting. He made the remarks during his opening speech at the inaugural session. At the start of the sitting, Tarique Rahman, speaking on behalf of the majority party BNP, welcomed the new parliament and expressed gratitude to those involved in the mass uprising. The session began at 11am on Thursday and was presided over by Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

The sitting was the first session of 2026. On February 23, the president convened the first session of parliament under Article 72(1) of the constitution.

Under the constitution, the president must summon the first session of a new parliament within 30 days of the publication of the election gazette. The session was convened on the written advice of the prime minister.
