Bus Harassment Incident: Ramzan Paribahan Staff Arrested in Mohammadpur

A staff member of Ramzan Paribahan has been arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) for allegedly harassing a university student on a moving bus in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area. The incident came to light after a video of the harassment went viral on social media. The accused, identified as Nizam Uddin (45), was detained from the Bashila area on Thursday evening (October 30)—three days after the incident.

According to RAB, Nizam Uddin worked as a bus conductor and driver’s assistant for Ramzan Paribahan. The viral footage shows that while traveling from Dhanmondi 15 to Bashila, Nizam made indecent comments about the attire of a young woman seated in front of him. When the woman protested, Nizam slapped her. The student, in an act of self-defense, struck back with her shoe, leading to a brief scuffle between the two. The woman, however, showed remarkable courage and fought back against the assault.

Major Abrar Faisal Sadi of RAB-4 stated that after the video went viral, a special operation was launched to identify and arrest the perpetrator. Nizam was later handed over to Mohammadpur Police Station following his arrest.

Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Rafique said that the victim filed a case on Friday morning, accusing Nizam of sexual harassment. The accused was subsequently sent to jail through the court.

RAB further reported that the incident occurred on October 27, when an argument broke out between Nizam and the student over bus fare. During the exchange, Nizam made lewd remarks and behaved indecently toward her. Other passengers captured the altercation on video and uploaded it to social media, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation.
