Tense Situation in Khagrachhari, Shops Remain Closed

Tension has gripped Khagrachhari following the gang rape of a Marma student. To bring the situation under control, the district administration has imposed Section 144, under which gatherings are prohibited. Since then, a tense calm has prevailed in the district town. From Sunday morning (September 28), army, BGB, and police forces have been deployed at key points across Khagrachhari municipality. Law enforcement personnel are interrogating commuters at various checkpoints. Shops and markets remain closed, though no fresh untoward incidents have been reported so far.

On Friday (September 26) and Saturday (September 27), during a dawn-to-dusk blockade, clashes broke out between two groups in the Mahajanpara and Sadar Upazila Parishad areas. At least 23 people were injured in the violence. Khagrachhari Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Saber said that 21 of them received primary treatment and were discharged, while two remain admitted at Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.

Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Md. Arefin Jewel said, “On Saturday afternoon, the situation escalated as clashes between two groups led to brick-throwing and chase-counter chase incidents. Later, the army, BGB, and police jointly brought the situation under control and dispersed the groups using sound grenades.”

Meanwhile, around 2,000 tourists who had been stranded in Sajek due to the blockade and violence were escorted to Khagrachhari under army protection on Saturday night (September 27). By midnight, they had all left the district for their respective destinations. Security forces are maintaining strict joint patrols to prevent any further escalation of violence.
