More than 200 students, along with the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Chittagong University (CU) and the university proctor, were injured in a series of violent clashes between students and local residents on Sunday (31 August). The incident took place near the university’s Gate No. 2 area. Despite repeated attempts, no assistance was received from law enforcement agencies, leaving Pro-VC Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin in tears as he urged everyone to remain calm.
In a video statement, he was heard saying:
“I am comparatively fine, but my students are severely injured. We have not received any help from the army or BGB yet. Every single student is being attacked with machetes. What kind of world are we living in? Please rescue our students. Our proctor, Pro-VC (Academic), and almost all our teachers and students are injured. We cannot even accommodate them in the medical facilities anymore.”
He alleged that Chhatra League cadres wearing helmets carried out the attacks. Despite contacting the Home Affairs Adviser and the Chief Adviser’s Office, no support arrived.
Breaking down in tears, he appealed:
“I beg with folded hands, our students please remain calm, and local residents please stay peaceful. We have always had good relations with this village. This incident happened due to the provocation of a vested quarter. Please do not get involved in this game.”
The Pro-VC assured students that the administration stands by them and that justice will be served for the attacks.
