Chhatra Shibir calls for action to resolve engineering college crisis

Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has called on students to express solidarity with the peaceful movement demanding a resolution to the long-standing academic and administrative crisis in government engineering colleges in the country and to accept their reasonable demands without delay.Shibir President Zahidul Islam and Secretary Nurul Islam said in a statement,The movement that students are carrying out through class-exam boycotts and academic shutdowns in various government engineering colleges in the country (Mymensingh, Faridpur, Barisal, Sylhet) is a just protest against the long-standing deprivation and mismanagement of engineering education. We express solidarity with this just movement and call on the government to quickly implement the students' reasonable demands. The leaders said that for a long time, students in these institutions have been plagued by various problems, including teacher shortages, weak infrastructure, lack of adequate research and lab facilities, failure to implement Outcome Based Education (OBE), and long session jams.Due to the dual structure of affiliation with Dhaka University and management under the Directorate of Technical Education, administrative complexity on the one hand, and academic opacity on the other, has severely damaged the quality of engineering education. The basic requirements for recognition by the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), especially the successful implementation of OBE, are not possible under the current framework. As a result, students are being deprived of important opportunities in their professional lives. The leaders further added that if the government and relevant departments do not take immediate and effective measures to resolve this crisis, the frustration and anger among students will intensify. We strongly condemn the unnecessary use of force by the police, attacks on students and harassment during the ongoing protests. In a democratic state, the rational movement of students should not be suppressed, but rather should be appropriately resolved through dialogue. If the government fails to take swift and practical steps to resolve the ongoing crisis, a larger nationwide movement could begin, for which the government will have to take full responsibility.
