From Self-Development to the Advancement of Civilization

In the history of social and civilizational evolution, the role of a teacher extends far beyond the mere transmission of information. A teacher is a sculptor of the human soul, a builder of social values, and a silent architect who envisions and shapes the future. It is often said that if education is the backbone of a nation, then teachers are its very soul. Throughout the ages, teachers have illuminated the darkness of society with the light of knowledge, challenged the walls of superstition, and guided generations toward the path of justice and righteousness. On the auspicious occasion of World Teachers’ Day, it is therefore imperative to remember and honor teachers and their invaluable contributions as one of the most powerful forces for social transformation.

Society is a dynamic entity, and teachers are among the key catalysts who help direct this dynamism toward positive change. Within the four walls of a classroom, a teacher does not merely complete a prescribed syllabus; rather, they nurture the minds and souls of their students. It is from teachers that children and young people learn honesty, humanity, patience, tolerance, and a sense of civic responsibility.

Education without morality can lead society toward destruction. A true teacher develops in students a sense of right and wrong and helps shape their character. They teach students to overcome arrogance and blind beliefs while embracing honesty, compassion, and humanity. One of the first conditions for social transformation is the ability to challenge superstition and develop the courage to ask questions. An ideal teacher encourages free thinking, which eventually contributes to the development of leadership qualities and strong, confident personalities.

Teachers also play a vital role in promoting social harmony and eliminating discrimination. The understanding that mutual respect and harmony must transcend differences of religion, ethnicity, or social class begins in the classroom. Teachers are the enlightened guides who cultivate a sense of equality and respect for others.

Similarly, teachers have a profound responsibility to inspire patriotism and social commitment. By teaching students about the history, heritage, responsibilities, and aspirations of their country, they nurture a deep sense of patriotism and love for humanity.

A Beacon of Love: Professor Bithia Sanchita Samaddar
Among those whose lives have been enriched by the noble profession of teaching, Professor Bithia Sanchita Samaddar stands as a remarkable example.

I first met Madam in the Department of Botany at Barishal Government Women’s College when I was an HSC student. From that day to this, we have met on various occasions and at different educational institutions in connection with our professional lives. Yet, whenever I meet her, I still feel like the same HSC student I once was. The profound influence of her teaching during those formative years has remained so deeply rooted in my heart that, in a sense, I feel I have remained her student throughout my life.

She is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Botany at the historic Dhaka College. Through her exceptional personality, wisdom, and dedication, this distinguished educator has shaped the lives of countless students.

In her classes on the complexities of botany, environmental protection, cells, and the subtle chemistry of life, she has not merely shared the light of knowledge; she has also spread the warmth of affection, compassion, and care. Every student who approaches her feels a unique sense of safety and belonging. To describe her simply as a “teacher” would be to underestimate the depth of her influence. In the lives of her students, she is like the comforting and nurturing presence of a mother.

Professor Bithia Sanchita Samaddar embodies a remarkable combination of many virtues. Her personality is at once strong and dignified, yet simple, humble, and radiant with integrity. Beneath her discipline and firmness lies an enduring affection that resembles the unconditional love of a mother.

It would not be an exaggeration to call her a songbird of culture. At cultural events, her melodious voice would flow like a river, inspiring us to appreciate beauty, creativity, and harmony. Through her profound wisdom and capable leadership, she taught her students not merely how to become good students, but how to become complete, compassionate, and responsible human beings.

She sought to inspire her students with patriotism and a spirit of service to humanity, striving to spread among them the seeds of light and hope. For every student fortunate enough to come under her guidance, her presence is a source of immense pride and gratitude. Her wisdom, empathy, and guidance have instilled in countless students the confidence to believe in themselves and the courage to stand for justice.

Teachers: Architects of a Better Civilization
Civilization moves forward on the strength of new dreams, and it is teachers who plant those dreams in the minds of future generations. When teachers like Professor Bithia Sanchita Samaddar shape students with knowledge, compassion, and intellectual excellence, they do far more than educate individuals. They help build a better society and a more honest, progressive, and humane nation.

On World Teachers’ Day, I offer my deepest respect and heartfelt wishes to Professor Bithia Sanchita Samaddar and to all teachers around the world. May the light of knowledge, humanity, and wisdom that they have left behind continue to illuminate our future.
