There is no involvement of the Bangladesh government in Barrister Zaima Rahman’s appointment at the United Nations, said Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office.He said Zaima Rahman, daughter of the Prime Minister, was not appointed to any position under the Prime Minister or the Bangladesh government. Rather, she is serving in a professional capacity under the Executive Office of the Office of the President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mahdi Amin made the remarks in response to questions from journalists at a press conference held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon yesterday.

Asked about reports and speculation surrounding Zaima Rahman’s appointment at the United Nations, the spokesperson said, “She was not appointed to the office of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh or to the office of Mr Khaleelur Rahman. Her appointment is with the Office of the President of the United Nations General Assembly. There is no involvement whatsoever of the Government of Bangladesh in the recruitment process.”

He said recruitment and appointments at the United Nations are carried out in accordance with the organisation’s rules, regulations and established procedures. According to him, the relevant human resources team under the UN’s executive structure handles recruitment and appointments, and the same process was followed in Zaima Rahman’s case.

Mahdi Amin also said that Zaima Rahman’s appointment process, financial benefits and other employment-related matters are governed entirely by the United Nations’ own rules and procedures. “There is no involvement of the Bangladesh government in any aspect of this,” he said.

Referring to information available on the UN website, he said Zaima Rahman had been appointed to a P-3 level professional position based on her qualifications and professional experience.

Explaining the UN’s professional grading system, Mahdi Amin said P-1 positions are generally entry-level professional posts, while P-2 positions require some professional experience. P-3 positions require a higher level of professional experience and are considered mid-level professional posts. According to him, a P-3 position generally requires around five years of relevant experience.

He further claimed that Zaima Rahman’s professional profile matches the requirements of the position. “A person working at the United Nations on the basis of her own qualifications and merit, representing herself in a professional capacity, should be appreciated for her professional career. There is no involvement of the government in this matter,” he said.

Mahdi Amin also addressed questions about whether Zaima Rahman is part of Bangladesh’s official delegation to the United Nations. He said she is not working as a member of any political or government delegation, but is serving the United Nations in her own professional capacity.

He further said that while there have been discussions in the past about attempts to create family influence within the United Nations for political reasons or to become part of official delegations, Zaima Rahman’s current role is not connected to such activities. According to him, she is serving at the United Nations solely in her personal professional capacity.

The spokesperson also urged people not to engage in what he described as misleading or false publicity surrounding Zaima Rahman’s employment at the United Nations. He said a Bangladeshi citizen working at an international organisation on the basis of professional qualifications and merit should not be unnecessarily linked to political controversy.

According to the information provided, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khaleelur Rahman is currently serving as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Zaima Rahman is reportedly working as a Legal Officer under the Executive Office of the Office of the President of the General Assembly.

Her name and position have also been listed on the United Nations website, according to the information cited at the press conference.

However, the specific details of Zaima Rahman’s recruitment process, the responsibilities attached to her position, the qualification requirements and the appointing authority should be verified through relevant official United Nations records and the organisation’s website.
