Leadership Shake-Up Looms in BNP’s Dhaka North Unit?

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is preparing to reorganize its Dhaka North metropolitan unit to make it more dynamic, stronger and more effective at the grassroots level, according to party sources. Discussions are reportedly underway within the party’s policymaking circles to bring active, experienced and long-serving leaders into key positions. Against this backdrop, speculation is growing among party leaders and activists that changes could be made to the leadership of the Dhaka North metropolitan unit.

According to party sources, the BNP is considering giving greater responsibility to leaders who have remained active in grassroots politics and maintained regular contact with party workers. Several former and current leaders of the Dhaka North unit are reportedly being considered as part of the reorganization process.

Those whose names have emerged in discussions include former convener of Dhaka North BNP Saiful Alam Nirob, BNP Executive Committee member Mamun Hasan, Dhaka-18 constituency lawmaker S. M. Jahangir, Dhaka North BNP administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, and former senior member of the Dhaka North unit Anwaruzzaman Anwar.

Sources said several other leaders could also be given important positions in the new committee.

Party insiders said organizational ability, grassroots political activity, political experience and regular communication with party workers are among the factors being considered in the restructuring process. The ability to coordinate effectively with leaders and activists at the thana and ward levels may also receive particular attention.

Meanwhile, there is growing discussion within the party about bringing Saiful Alam Nirob back into a key leadership position in Dhaka North BNP. Party sources said there is a possibility that he could once again be given an important responsibility in the metropolitan unit. However, the final decision is expected to be taken after discussions involving the party’s Chairman and central policymakers.

Another leader whose name has emerged in connection with the possible leadership changes is Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, who currently serves as the administrator of Dhaka North BNP. His role in making the organization more active and effective is also reportedly being discussed within different levels of the party.

The names of Dhaka-18 lawmaker S. M. Jahangir and BNP Executive Committee member Mamun Hasan have also surfaced in discussions over the possible reorganization. Given the political importance of Dhaka North, their organizational experience and political roles could be considered in determining the new structure, according to party-level discussions.

The name of Anwaruzzaman Anwar, a former senior member of Dhaka North BNP, has also been mentioned among those being considered for leadership roles. At the same time, discussions are reportedly underway about bringing several other active leaders into the new committee.

A member of the BNP Standing Committee said, “A new committee will be announced to make Dhaka North BNP stronger, more dynamic and more disciplined. Reorganization is a normal and regular process in a political organization. I am hopeful that dedicated and tested leaders and activists who have made sacrifices on the streets will be given due recognition in the new committee.”

Party leaders said Dhaka North BNP plays an important role in the political landscape of the capital. Therefore, the proposed reorganization is expected to focus not only on the top leadership but also on strengthening the organizational structure at the thana and ward levels.

The party may also take initiatives to reorganize units that have remained inactive or organizationally weak for an extended period, according to people familiar with the matter.

However, no official announcement has yet been made regarding who will eventually take charge of the new leadership of Dhaka North BNP. The final structure is expected to become clear only after a formal decision by the party’s central leadership.

As a result, the names currently being discussed should be viewed as possibilities rather than confirmed appointments until the BNP makes an official announcement.

Party leaders believe that a new committee could give fresh momentum to the organizational activities of Dhaka North BNP. However, the final structure, designation of posts and distribution of responsibilities remain subject to the party’s formal decision.
