BNP candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and party Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has said that he has no record of quarrels or clashes with political rivals, responding to allegations surrounding an egg-throwing incident involving National Citizen Party (NCP) chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari.Mirza Abbas made the remarks on Tuesday (27 January) while speaking to journalists during an election campaign. Earlier, Nasiruddin Patwari alleged that those responsible for the attack were supporters of his rival BNP candidate, Mirza Abbas.Asked about the allegation, Mirza Abbas said such claims were being made deliberately. “They have been looking for opportunities like this for a long time. They are trying to provoke a confrontation somehow,” he said.
He questioned the necessity of getting involved in unnecessary disputes, stating that he had no need to quarrel with anyone without cause. “The real question is whether there is any record of me engaging in fights. I have been contesting elections in this area since 1977, not since today. I have no record of clashes or conflicts with political opponents,” he said.
Calling the allegations politically motivated, Mirza Abbas said they were being raised with some ulterior motive.
When asked about the overall electoral environment in Dhaka-8, Mirza Abbas said he did not wish to comment at the moment. However, he acknowledged that there were some problems related to polling centres in certain areas.
Citing an example, he said a polling centre had been set up in an under-construction building at Railway School, which he described as unsuitable for voting. “Overall, the environment is good so far,” he added.
