After a gruelling 42-hour manual count, voting tabulation for the Jahangirnagar Central Student Union (JUCSU) election has concluded — with official results expected to be announced at 4:30 pm on Saturday. The final votes were tallied at 2:30 pm on Saturday at the Election Commission office, according to Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Moniruzzaman, who confirmed the timing of the result declaration.Voting for the much-anticipated student union polls began at 9 am on Thursday, 11 September, and continued until 5 pm the same day. The counting process commenced shortly after, at 10:15 pm, but stretched across two days due to the entirely manual nature of the exercise. The election, however, was not without controversy. Four major student panels, including Chhatra Dal, and five independent candidates boycotted the polls, citing concerns over fairness and transparency. In a further escalation, four pro-BNP faculty members, including one election commissioner, resigned from their posts ahead of voting, alleging a lack of level playing field and multiple procedural irregularities.
A total of 177 candidates contested for 25 central executive positions. The electorate comprised 11,897 registered students, 6,115 male and 5,728 female, of whom approximately 68 per cent turned out to cast their ballots, reflecting strong, albeit contested, student engagement.
As the campus awaits the final outcome, attention now turns to whether the results will be accepted across the political spectrum — or whether the boycott and resignations will cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the newly elected union.
