Low Vote Counts  Dominate Ducsu VP Race

In the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election, a total of 44 candidates contested for the position of vice president (VP). However, the majority received only a handful of votes, with several barely managing to secure support beyond their own circles.

Three candidates — Sujon Hossain, Rakibul Hasan, and Russell Haque — received just one vote each.

In total, 22 candidates failed to cross the 10-vote mark, while another 10 candidates polled fewer than 50 votes.

Candidates with 10 or fewer votes (22):

Al-Amin Islam (10), Asif Anwar Antik (5), Jalal Ahmed alias “Jwalamoyi Jalal” – disqualified (8), Din Mohammad Sohag (6), Mahdi Hasan (9), Muhammad Abu Taiyob (10), Azgar Bepari (6), Shafi Rahman (6), Ataur Rahman Shipon (5), Abul Hossain (7), Ujjal Hossain (6), Nasim Uddin (2), Faisal Ahmed (4), Mudabbir Rahman (3), Russell Mahmud (7), Sohanur Rahman (2), Habibullah (2), Helalur Rahman (3), Jannati Bulbul (6), Zayed Bin Iqbal (7), Riaz Uddin Ahmed (8), Shah Jamal Sayem (3).

Candidates with fewer than 50 votes (10):

Abdul Wahed (27), Ariful Islam (23), Sadeq Hossain (39), Zahid Hasan (17), Tahmina Akter (26), Marzia Hossain Jamila (35), Delwar Hossain (12), Naim Hasan (24), Rahul Deb Roy (20), Sumit Sen (14).

Candidates with relatively higher votes (9):

  • Sadiq Kayem (backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir) – 14,042 votes, elected VP

  • Abidul Islam Khan (backed by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal) – 5,708 votes

  • Shamim Hossain (independent) – 3,883 votes

  • Umama Fatema – 3,389 votes

  • Abdul Kader – 1,103 votes

  • Jamal Uddin Khalid – 503 votes

  • Bin Yamin Molla – 136 votes

  • Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Imi – 68 votes

  • Yasin Arafat – 62 votes

Despite the large pool of candidates, the VP race turned out to be a one-sided contest, with Sadiq Kayem securing a landslide victory. His nearest rival, Abidul Islam Khan, trailed by over 8,000 votes.
