Top 5 NCP leaders face show-cause notices over pleasure trip on ‘July 36’

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued show cause notices to five of its central leaders for an unannounced visit to Cox’s Bazar on the first anniversary of the July Uprising—a day marked nationally for its political significance.A formal letter, dated August 6 and signed by Saleh Uddin Sifat, Joint Member Secretary (Office) of the party, was sent to the leaders, demanding an explanation within 24 hours. Those who received the notices are:  Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser for southern region, Sarjis Alam, chief organiser for northern region, Dr Tasnim Zara, joint convener, Nasiruddin Patwari, joint convener, and Khalid Saifullah, joint convener.

The party’s letter states that the leaders undertook a “personal visit” to Cox’s Bazar on August 5 without prior notification or approval from the NCP’s Political Council. Given the importance of the day, commemorating the July Uprising, the lack of communication has raised internal concerns about discipline and coordination.

The notice instructs the leaders to appear in person and submit a written explanation to NCP Convener Md Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain within 24 hours, detailing the purpose and context of their trip.

The visit came as a surprise to party ranks. According to sources, the five leaders arrived at Cox’s Bazar International Airport at 11:30 am on August 5 via Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-433. Instead of using official or party-arranged transport, they rented a Toyota Noah microbus from the airport and proceeded to Hotel Sea Pearl & Spa in Inani, along Marine Drive.

A local driver who rented the vehicle confirmed the details but said the leaders did not disclose the purpose of their visit. As of now, no official reason has been provided for why the leaders chose to travel to Cox’s Bazar rather than participate in the national observances held in Dhaka.

The party leadership has emphasized the importance of transparency and adherence to internal protocols, particularly on significant political dates. The outcome of the leaders’ explanations may influence further disciplinary actions.
