Irregularities and Undue Influence within the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society

After remaining silent for a long time, I have finally felt compelled to bring certain matters to the attention of the public. I firmly believe that, in the interest of preserving the transparency, neutrality, and integrity of a humanitarian organization, these issues deserve the attention of the relevant authorities as well as the people of Bangladesh. I am a Life Member of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and served the organization for approximately 34 years as a professional officer. It is out of a sense of responsibility toward the institution that I am making this statement.

Following the political transition in Bangladesh in August 2024, Major General Rafiqul Islam was appointed as the Chairman of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. However, within only six months, he was relieved of his duties, and Mr. Azizul Islam was appointed as the new Chairman. This appointment gave rise to considerable discussion and raised questions among various stakeholders.

I allege that, after assuming office, Mr. Azizul Islam undermined the Society's long-standing tradition of neutrality and humanitarian values. In my view, he created divisions among youth volunteers and made a number of decisions aimed at advancing personal and political interests. As a result, the organizational activities of the Youth Red Crescent in several districts were weakened, and divisions among volunteers emerged—effects that have yet to be fully overcome.

Because I spoke out against these actions, I personally became the target of various forms of administrative harassment. I allege that, despite being only four months away from retirement, I was transferred three times in quick succession. In addition, an investigation committee was formed on the basis of unfounded allegations in an apparent attempt to remove me from my position. Throughout my long career, however, no allegation of misconduct or irregularity against me has ever been substantiated.

I further allege that appointments and promotions were made in violation of the Society's established rules and regulations, and that important decisions were influenced by political considerations rather than institutional merit. I understand that, in protest against such practices, the then Vice Chairman, Treasurer, and several other senior members resigned from their respective positions.

I also allege that officers and employees who expressed dissenting views were subjected to transfers, dismissal, and other forms of administrative pressure. These actions created an atmosphere of fear within the organization and significantly disrupted the normal working environment.

Furthermore, I allege that irregularities occurred in the management and utilization of the Society's funds. I respectfully call for these matters to be examined through an independent, impartial, and transparent investigation. I also request an investigation into my allegation that organizational funds were used to finance defamatory campaigns against me through social media and certain online platforms.

I firmly believe that, in order to protect the reputation and credibility of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society as an internationally recognized humanitarian organization, all of the allegations outlined above should be investigated in a fair, transparent, and credible manner. If my allegations are found to be false, I am fully prepared to accept responsibility. However, if they are proven to be true, I believe it is both the legal and moral responsibility of the relevant authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible.

In support of my allegations, I have preserved messages, documents, and other relevant evidence, which I am prepared to present to any duly authorized investigative body whenever required.

I wish to emphasize that this statement is not motivated by personal grievance or retaliation. Rather, it is made in good faith and in the interest of safeguarding the reputation, neutrality, accountability, and future of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society. I therefore respectfully call for an independent investigation and the due application of the law regarding the matters raised herein.
