Jamaat-e-Islami Active in Electoral Preparations and Party Activities

Since August 5 of last year, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has become increasingly active in political activities. The party is undergoing reforms and changes in various areas, including electoral preparations, party meetings and rallies, logo redesign, and increased participation of women. However, it continues to face criticism on issues related to the Liberation War and religion.Analysis of the party’s activities shows the use of red and green colors in the stage setup at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan, posters, banners, and festoons for party events. Additionally, the party has unveiled a new logo inspired by the national flag. Experts believe this reflects Jamaat’s attempt to demonstrate patriotism and reduce controversies over the Liberation War.

Mubarak Hossain, a member of the Central Executive Council, said, “Policies may change according to the demands of the era and political needs. However, fundamental issues will remain intact according to Islamic principles.”

Women’s participation in party activities is also on the rise. The Jamaat Women’s Wing has three membership levels: associate member, worker, and Rukon, with around 50,000 Rukon members. The party has over one million members nationwide, with women comprising about 40 percent. Abdul Halim, Assistant Secretary General, stated, “Interest in voting among women is increasing. Women’s participation will continue to expand in accordance with basic Islamic principles.”

The logo redesign removed Arabic words and incorporated the national flag’s colors. Analysts say this sends a new political message and signals the party’s attempt to present a more secular image.

According to the Executive Council, candidates will be nominated based on merit and integrity. For instance, Haji Hafiz Enayet Ullah has been announced as the candidate for Dhaka-7.

Since last August, the long-standing electoral alliance with BNP has ended, and Jamaat is exploring coordination with other Islamic parties. The party is also planning joint movements based on five demands, including proportional representation (PR) in elections.

The recent amendments in Jamaat’s constitution reflect the party’s goal to establish a just and equitable society, respecting the sacrifices of the people and the valor of the freedom fighters of Bangladesh.
