Professor Dr. Farhad Halim Donar, Executive Director of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF), visited “Ziaur Rahman Way” in Chicago, United States, on May 31. He was accompanied by Chicago BNP President Shah Mozammel Haque, Organizational Secretary Dulu, and several other party leaders and activists.
During the visit, Shah Mozammel Haque recalled that in September 2014, Chicago City Council member Joseph A. Moore of the Democratic Party officially unveiled the street sign designating the roadway as “Ziaur Rahman Way.” The inauguration ceremony featured the national anthems of Bangladesh and the United States, followed by the unveiling of the signboard and the release of balloons.
Haque noted that shortly after the street was named, supporters of the then Awami League government filed a court case challenging the designation. However, through legal efforts undertaken by BNP supporters, the street name was successfully retained. He added that the road was previously known as “Club Street” and is now officially recognized as “Ziaur Rahman Way.”
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Farhad Halim Donar said, “It is a matter of great pride and joy for me to visit a street named after Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in a country like the United States. At the same time, I feel emotional because May 30 marked the martyrdom anniversary of President Ziaur Rahman.”
He further stated that the Ziaur Rahman Foundation has undertaken a number of programs to commemorate the anniversary. These included laying floral wreaths at Ziaur Rahman’s grave and holding special prayers on May 30. In addition, the Foundation has published a special commemorative supplement highlighting his life, achievements, and contributions to the nation.
Dr. Donar also announced that a nationwide tree plantation campaign has been launched to preserve the memory and ideals of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. The program is scheduled to be officially inaugurated on June 10 at the University of Dhaka and Dhaka Medical College. The inauguration ceremony will be led by Dr. Zubaida Rahman, Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation and a distinguished cardiologist.
