BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu has said that those attempting to delay the upcoming national elections by raising new demands are “living in a fool’s paradise.”“We believe the future belongs to nationalism, and there is no alternative to it,” he said while addressing a rally as chief guest, organized by the Nationalist Writers’ Forum in front of the National Press Club on Sunday (September 28).Dudu stated, “Certain quarters think they have no future if elections are held. That is why they are making hollow statements and raising fresh demands to delay the polls. But those who are doing this are actually living in a fool’s paradise. The people of this country have struggled for 16 years to protect their rights and opinions. The only way to safeguard these rights is through elections. There is no other alternative. Let us go to the polls and prove who is truly popular.”
He further emphasized, “Bangladesh must hold elections soon. The government must be formed through a parliament elected by the people. If anyone thinks they can impose anything on the people outside the election process, it will not be acceptable.”
The BNP leader added, “We supported the government on the question of democracy. We have kept the government in place to ensure a fair election. Our expectation is that the government will take the necessary steps within a short time to arrange a credible election, and we will support that.”
Issuing a warning, Dudu said, “If anyone thinks neighboring countries can occupy Bangladesh, such thoughts are misguided. Bangladeshis are a nation of brave people. They have never bowed down to anyone, nor will they ever. A nation that has shed blood for its freedom and whose youth can rise in rebellion can never be subdued.”
The rally was presided over by poet Shaheen Reza, president of the Nationalist Writers’ Forum, and attended by BNP Chairperson’s adviser Abdus Salam, executive committee member Mainul Islam, among other leaders.
