BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of spreading propaganda without presenting any specific information or evidence in an attempt to cast doubt on a peaceful and fair election.
He said Jamaat was conspiring to make the election controversial, just as it had allegedly misled people during various past movements and political crises.
Rizvi made the remarks while addressing a doa and milad mahfil held at Nabi Tower in Demra, Dhaka, in memory of late BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed and former councillor Badal Sardar.
Criticising Jamaat's political role, Rizvi said the party had been making vague allegations of irregularities at the last moment without identifying specific incidents or naming those allegedly involved in wrongdoing.
He alleged that Jamaat's main objective was to deliberately undermine the election in the eyes of the public. However, he said, people were now aware and would not be misled by such propaganda.
Recalling the political career of former lawmaker Salahuddin Ahmed, the BNP leader described him as an uncompromising and principled leader who played a significant role in the party's 17-year-long movement against what he termed the fascist regime.
Rizvi said hundreds of fabricated cases, physical and mental torture in the name of remand, and prolonged imprisonment had severely damaged Salahuddin Ahmed's health.
He further alleged that denying him proper medical treatment had gradually pushed him towards death.
"Not only Salahuddin Ahmed, but many leaders and activists, including Begum Khaleda Zia, were subjected to similar systematic persecution," he said.
The programme was chaired by Dhaka-5 parliamentary constituency's chief coordinator Nobiullah Nobi.
Among others, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator and freedom fighter Abdus Salam, BNP Secretary for Self-Reliance Affairs Advocate Shirin Sultana, and Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed Robin addressed the event as special guests.
