July Charter to be sealed on Oct 15 on JS South Plaza

The July National Charter 2025, a landmark political framework aimed at building national consensus during the ongoing transition, will be formally signed on October 15 at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. The historic signing ceremony will be led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of the Interim Government and Chairman of the National Consensus Commission. Representatives from major political parties, alliances, and civic groups across the country are expected to participate in the event, which is being described as a “turning point” in Bangladesh’s political restructuring process.

The decision to finalise the date was taken on Thursday (October 9) during a meeting of the Commission at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The meeting reviewed expert opinions and feedback gathered through five rounds of consultations held with political parties over recent months. These discussions focused on the implementation strategy, governance reforms, and institutional accountability outlined in the July Charter.

According to Commission sources, the final version of the Charter reflects a wide range of political and civic inputs, seeking to lay out a shared roadmap for electoral reforms, decentralisation, and good governance.

The Commission expressed optimism that, based on the feedback received from experts and political leaders, comprehensive recommendations on the Charter’s implementation mechanisms will soon be submitted to the government.

Among those present at Thursday’s meeting were Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz, and members Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, Justice Md Emdadul Haque, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, and Dr Md Aiyub Mia. Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider also attended.

Officials indicated that preparations are underway to ensure the October 15 ceremony reflects the spirit of national unity the Charter aspires to achieve — bringing together diverse political actors under a single framework for inclusive governance and democratic renewal.
