Left-Wing Parties Move Toward Forming a New Electoral Alliance

As the 13th National Parliamentary Election approaches, left-wing political parties in Bangladesh are moving toward a new political alignment. After years of division, the progressive parties are now working to form a united electoral alliance, which may announce its final outline by mid-November, according to party sources.Following the Election Commission’s roadmap, the election schedule is expected to be announced in December, with voting likely to take place in early February. Keeping this timeline in mind, left-leaning parties are seeking to build a broader leftist unity ahead of the polls.

Party insiders said discussions are ongoing to bring together six parties from the Left Democratic Alliance (LDA), led by the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BASAD), as well as seven parties from the Anti-Fascist Left Front, along with Gono Forum, Bangladesh JASAD, and Oikya NAP. The initiative’s organizers are also maintaining communication with the leftist groups currently within the Gonotantra Moncho (Democracy Platform).

Bazlur Rashid Firoz, coordinator of the Left Democratic Alliance, said:

“We are finalizing our party candidates now. If the alliance is formed, we will contest the election jointly. Talks with the Anti-Fascist Left Front, Gono Forum, JASAD, and Oikya NAP have made significant progress. We are also in early discussions with parties in the Gonotantra Moncho.”

Saiful Haque, general secretary of the Bangladesh Revolutionary Workers Party, noted that the possibility of leftist unity has grown from their joint movement over the past months.

“We share a common interest in unity. This will not be just an electoral coalition—it will also reflect ideological harmony among the left. We intend to reach out to other progressive democratic groups as well,” he said.

Nazmul Haque Pradhan, general secretary of Bangladesh JASAD, said:

“We want all progressive, democratic, and secular forces to unite on one platform. If that happens, it will create a new trend in national politics. We hope to finalize the alliance by November.”

Ragib Ahsan, presidium member of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), said:

“We aim to build a third political force—one that is neither capitalist nor religion-based. Our goal is to represent the voices of the poor and the working class.”

Grassroots leaders within the leftist groups added that the proposed alliance might nominate not only party politicians but also progressive, socially respected, and non-partisan individuals as candidates.

Meanwhile, the Gonotantra Moncho announced 120 potential candidates on October 9. Leftist leaders said that if the broader alliance takes shape, some of these candidates may contest the election under a unified alliance banner.
