Senior Joint Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, has raised concerns over the neutrality of the Election Commission (EC), saying its conduct has created doubts about the fairness of the upcoming election.Speaking at the inauguration of a free medical camp organized on the occasion of the birth anniversary of former President Ziaur Rahman in Jajira, Shariatpur, on Tuesday (January 20), Rizvi said the Election Commission must perform its duties in a way that leaves no room for questions regarding impartiality.
“The Election Commission should act in such a manner that no one can question its neutrality. However, due to various actions of the EC, doubts have already arisen about the neutrality of the election,” he said.
Rizvi said people had been deprived of their voting rights for the last 15 to 16 years and now want to go to polling centers and cast their votes without fear. “It is the responsibility of the interim government to ensure a safe and fair environment so that people can vote freely,” he added.
Expressing concern, he said, “It appears to me that the Election Commission is not yet able to normalize the overall situation. I believe firm and fair action is necessary to restore confidence. If the Commission shows bias toward any side, people’s long-standing fears will once again prove to be true.”
BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam, District BNP Organizing Secretary Saeed Ahmed Aslam, and other party leaders were also present at the event.
